COURSE SYNOPSIS
Welcome to the Year 4 Radiology posting. In this period you will spend 2 weeks in the Radiology Department. During this
short period, the aim is for you to grasp adequate knowledge and understanding of basic radiological principles.
We hope you can correlate the teaching with the lectures that you have had previously in year 2 and 3. During the whole 10
weeks of the specialized posting, there will be also 10 radiology lectures every Monday afternoon and one Radiology Seminar.
Learning radiology doesn’t stop in this 2 weeks short radiology posting. It is a continuous learning process which started on the first
day you enter your clinical years in year 3. In every clinical posting, whether it is Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology,
Orthopaedics, Surgery, Internal Medicine, ORL, Ophthalmology or Anaesthesia, there will be things in radiology need to be learned.
Whatever you learn in this two weeks posting need to be correlated with what you have and going to learn in all the clinical
postings.
We hope in year 5, you can consult the radiologist on ad hoc basis to discuss any interesting cases that you have seen during
your clinical postings. This will give you more understanding on the clinical cases that you have seen.

a. You are expected to be in the department at all times from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm except during the general lectures in
Jalan Hospital Campus.
b. You are advised to divide yourselves into small groups for the room posting especially for ultrasound, CT scan and MRI
room postings.
c. However for IVU and Fluoroscopy postings, all of you are advised to attend these rooms, due to limited cases done
during the two weeks posting.
d. All of you are advised to read about the procedures a day before by checking the type of cases from the appointment
book.
e. IVU is performed every Monday and Friday.
f. Fluoroscopy is performed every Tuesday and Thursday.
g. US, CT, MRI and general radiography are performed every working day.
h. Please introduce yourself to the Radiologists, Medical Officer, Radiographers or Staff Nurse when you enter any
examination rooms in the department.
i.
Interventional procedures are being performed on ad-hoc basis. You should ask the medical officers or staff nurses if
there are any interventional cases which will be performed on that day.

MED4702: RADIOLOGY LOG BOOK
B. Tutorials
a. All tutorials are being done either in the tutorial room, examination room or IIUM Breast Centre.
b. There are no fixed times for tutorials.
c. You should check on the whiteboard for the time and schedule for the tutorials.
d. You must go through the films on the motorized panels before the tutorials, to expedite the discussion.
C. Pre test assessment
a. These must be done after the briefing with the radiologist on the first day of the posting.
b. The format as stated on the white board must be followed.
c. The films will be discussed later during the tutorials with the radiologist who briefed you.
D. Filling the log book
a. The log book must be with you all the time during the posting.
b. You must study all the request form, for the clinical data, indication for study and radiological diagnosis.
c. Due to limited spaces, only relevant data must be included in the log book.
d. The procedures can only be signed either by the medical officer or radiologist in charge of the cases.
e. For plain radiography section, it can be signed by radiographers or MRTs.
f. For mammography, male students are not encouraged to observe the examination unless allowed by the patient.

E. End of posting Assessment / OSCE
a. At the end of the posting, usually on the second Friday, there will be an end of posting assessment.
b. The marks for this assessment will be included in the clinical component of the whole specialized posting block.
c. It will be done in OSCE format (Objectively Structured Clinical Examination).
d. There will be 10 OSCE questions.
e. You will be given 5 minutes to view the film and answer the questions given for each OSCE.
f. For the assessment, you will be divided into 2 groups, with 3 to 4 persons per group.
g. The total time for the test is about 1 hour.
