PRAIRIE ORCHARD FARMS BEGINS MAJOR EXPANSION INTO CHINA
(Winnipeg, Manitoba – April 30, 2007) – To meet the demand for functional foods in the
rapidly developing Chinese economy, Prairie Orchard Farms today announced the first
step into an expanded presence in China.
Prairie Orchard Farms of Winnipeg, Manitoba in cooperation with the China-Canada
Super Food Co., Ltd. has signed an agreement to supply Omega-3 and Selenium Enriched
Pork products to select supermarkets, restaurants and hotels across China. Willy
Hoffmann, President of Prairie Orchard Farms says, “Pork is one of the most popular
meats consumed by the Chinese population and consumers there are always looking for
healthy, natural food products”. Hoffmann adds, “Many people have an increased
awareness of the role that functional foods can play in supporting their health, longevity
and well being”.
Prairie Orchard Farms, a Canadian owned and operated meat producer, is North
America’s first company to produce and market pork products that are nutritionally
enhanced with Omega-3 fatty acids. Prairie Orchard Farms have received approval from
the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA) to label its pork as being a source of Omega-3 fatty acids.
Prairie Orchard Farms pork products are also nutritionally enhanced with selenium,
which is a trace mineral that is linked to a strengthened immune system. Selenium is also
known to have antioxidant properties found to reduce the risks of breast, colon and
prostrate cancers, heart disease and the effects of Alzheimer’s. One serving of Prairie
Orchard Farms pork supplies 50-60% of the recommended daily intake of selenium.
China-Canada Super Foods Co., Ltd. is a newly formed division of Right Joint Real
Estate Development Co., Ltd. They are a major real-estate and land developer who own
hotels across China, such as the Taiwan Hotel, the Hot Spring Hotel, The Oriental Pearl
Hotel, the 38-storey World Wide Plaza, a newly constructed 33-storey Foreign Economic
Plaza, and the Olympic Golf Course, just to name a few. China-Canada Super Food Co.,
Ltd. plans to introduce food products into China including those with functional food
values such as Prairie Orchard Farms Omega-3 and Selenium Enriched Pork, and to
market these products to hotels, restaurants and groceries across China.
Functional foods are now a distinct category of food that is becoming better known
worldwide. Japan was the first country to embrace this category within their food supply.
Known as “Foods for Specified Health Use” or “FOSHU”, they are the fastest growing
category in not only the functional food but all food categories in Japan. Since its
inception in 1991, FOSHU sales have been growing at an average of 25 percent annually.
