PROGRAMME Palazzo in festa An Uncommon Festival Opening in Roman Spirit Concerts, workshop, caffè, gelato Sunday 14. 7. 2013, starting from 3.00 pm Clam-Gallas Palace, Husova 20, Prague 1 Tickets: 250 Kč (includes concerts and workshop) Children under 15 admission free. This year’s programming shows Rome as a lively music centre, the place of origin or metamorphosis of many musical styles and genres, including the oratorio (as the sacred version of Baroque opera), secular cantata and instrumental solo sonata, as well as the majestic orchestral concerto grosso. The atmosphere of the summer Prague and the beautiful architecture of all the concert venues will contribute to both the relaxed southern spirit and the festive character of the three festival weeks. The two aspects shall commingle in the Additional Event of the festival on 14 July when the Baroque Clam-Gallas Palace in the Old Town of Prague will resound with fanfares, Roman Baroque songs, dances, and sonatas. Those interested will have a chance to participate in a music workshop, to sing along and learn about some of the less known period instruments. Besides music, there will also be Italian caffè and gelato – all in all it is going to be a true summer Palazzo in festa! The performance by the renowned German ensemble of vocal soloists Cantus Coelln will open the 14th Summer Festivities of Early Music, erecting a triumphal arch through which Rome and its musical heritage will keep flowing to Prague in the course of the following three weeks… In cooperation with Prague Castle Administration. Cappella Sistina Great Renaissance Polyphony at the Sistine Chapel CAPPELLA MARIANA (Czech Republic) – vocal ensemble Vojtěch Semerád – artistic director Tuesday 23. 7. 2013, 8.00 pm Former Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia, Anežská 12, Prague 1 Tickets: 550, 350 CZK Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Gregorio Allegri, Cristóbal de Morales, Felice Anerio CAPPELLA MARIANA (Czech Republic) – vocal ensemble Hana Blažíková, Tereza Wollnerová, Barbora Sojková – soprano Marta Fadljevičová – mezzo-soprano Daniela Čermáková – alto Vojtěch Semerád, Tomáš Lajtkep – tenor Tomáš Král – baritone Jaromír Nosek – bass Vojtěch Semerád – artistic director In the old times, the Sistine Chapel did not emit just smoke that the whole world would watch in expectation: the Vatican air was then permeated by celestial music. On July the 24th, the St. Saviour Church of St. Agnes Cloister in Prague will experience a magic transformation into Cappella Sistina, brought about by the vocal ensemble Cappella Mariana conducted by Vojtěch Semerád. Through their sung contemplation they will revive some of the renaissance masters who dedicated their compositional mastery and their own voices to the Sistine: Felice Anerio, Jean Mouton, and Cristóbal de Morales who drew inspiration from the then just originating murals by Michelangelo. We shall also hear Pierluigi da Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli, to which relates the myth of prohibition of polyphonic music in the church by the Council of Trent (1545-1563). Even though, in fact, polyphony was never abandoned and Palestrina did not have to “save” polyphonic music in the Roman Catholic Church, the pure style of his Missa contributes to the lasting appeal of the genre. The next piece on the program, the famous (and by the Vatican jealously protected) Miserere mei, Deus by Gregorio Allegri, so fascinated young Mozart that he memorized it on one hearing and secretly wrote it down later, risking excommunication. No doubt St. Agnes herself will take a break caring for the ill and the poor in order to draw new strength from the timeless music from the eternal city… In collaboration with the National Gallery in Prague.
