JOB DESCRIPTION

POST:
Health Care Assistant- Breast Care Services
BASE:
Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
SALARY RANGE:
£14,294 – £17,425 per annum pro rata
(Band 2)
REPORTS TO:
Breast Care Nurse Practitioner/Matron
ACCOUNTABLE TO:
Senior Matron, Surgical Division
JOB PURPOSE:
The post holder will assist qualified nursing staff with the
provision of individualised nursing care. To support the
nursing team in the achievement of the department
objectives.
KEY RESULT AREAS:
The post holder will have three key result areas:
Clinical
The post holder will:1.
Maintain confidentiality of the patients, staff and trust at all times.
2.
Under the direction of qualified nursing staff deliver individual programmes of care
undertaking duties as delegated by qualified members of the nursing team. Duties
include preparation of the clinic to receive patients, co-ordination of patient flow
through clinics, acting as a chaperone, delivery and collection of laboratory
specimens, dressing of minor wounds, providing support with self-care, fitting of
breast prostheses and general housekeeping duties.
3.
Following appropriate training take and record patient observations including body
mass index, blood pressure and pulse. Report results.
4.
Assist doctors/ nurses undertaking minor procedures in the department.
6.
Communicate all relevant information concerning the patient’s needs/cares to the
appropriate qualified nurse responsible for the patient.

7.
Liaise and communicate relevant information to other members of the
multidisciplinary team.
8.
Contribute to effective communication in the department by assisting with appropriate
clerical duties.
9.
Work with colleagues to promote the development of the department philosophy and
agreed department objectives.
10.
Work with colleagues to develop clinical expertise and continually improve standards
of nursing practice.
11.
Assist in developing a therapeutic environment, which meets the needs of patients.
12.
Be familiar and comply at all times with relevant operational, personnel, health &
safety policies, procedures and protocols applicable to the post.
13.
Contribute to the control of infection by performing appropriate cleaning duties.
Clinically Effective Services
The post holder will:
1.
Work as a member of the nursing team to ensure that nursing care is clinically
effective and complying with the requirements of the Trust’s Clinical
Governance Committee.
2.
Be supportive of research and audit undertaken by other members of the
multidisciplinary team.
3.
Contribute to the application and evaluation of current research and audit findings.
4.
Assist the Breast Care Practitioners to ensure that services comply with the
standards required by the relevant professional bodies.
Education
The post holder will:1
Under the guidance of the Breast Care Nurse Practitioners, identify own learning
needs and participate in the Trust’s appraisal programme.

Assist in the facilitation of a learning environment conducive to the acquisition of
further knowledge and skills.
3
Liaise with colleagues to co-ordinate the approach to the development of staff within
the department.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
