Beginning research in Middle East and Islamic Studies The AUP Library has a selection of reference tools, monographs, databases, periodicals, e-books, e-resources that will help you conduct your research. It also presents you various services that can help you reach out the information available in the rich universe of French academic or specialized libraries. 1. MONOGRAPHS IN MIDDLE EAST & ISLAMIC STUDIES Use the library’s online catalog to look for books in the library’s collection by author, title, subject terms or keyword. Go to http://library.aup.fr/, select the feature ‘Search for: Book, Film Journal’. A great selection of titles is available unfortunately due to the number it is not possible to list them in this guide. DATABASES: Another type of electronic resources constitutes the indexes and databases available through the AUP Library web site, available through the feature ‘Search for Article (in databases)’. It is important to access them through the library web page, otherwise you will have to pay for most of the information. FINDING ARTICLES AND BOOKS IN OTHER LIBRARIES For your convenience the Library has an interlibrary loan & document delivery service that can help you access books and articles not found in the AUP Library. However, the AUP Library cannot determine the response time as processing varies greatly from library to library and the time of the year of the requests. Therefore, the following steps are recommended before submitting a document request. 4.1. Tips to select your monographs: - Search carefully in the online catalog to confirm that the University Library does not own the item you are looking for. Locate the section ‘Find Books in Other Libraries’ on the AUP library’s web page: 2 To locate book or articles in France you can use the union catalog of French academic libraries SUDOC or the Catalogue Collectif de France- CCFR (all French libraries).Once you have located your item, fill out the AUP Library document delivery request form (by going to our web site, selecting Library Services: Forms: Document Delivery – Books or Document Delivery - Articles). - To locate book or articles in the rest of the world you can use the world’s union catalog called WorldCat. Tips to select your articles: - Search carefully in the library online periodicals and their database coverage. Using the library web page select the feature ‘Browse a List of Journals’ under Resources. Enter your periodical title in the search box or select the initial letter of the title. Once the results are displayed you may have a list of databases covering the publication. Select your database. - If the periodical title is not available at the AUP library you may check on SUDOC, CCFR or WorldCat to see which library has it, then you may chose to go to a specific Paris library or chose to send a request of document delivery. - Fill out the AUP Library document delivery request form (by going to our web site, selecting Library Services: Forms: Document Delivery – Articles). 5. OTHER PARIS LIBRARIES & SCIENCES-PO The following are complementary key libraries for conducting research in Middle East and Islamic studies: 5.1 AUP and the University Library have arranged for graduate students access the Sciences-Po Library http://bibliotheque.sciences-po.fr/fr/index.html (30, rue SaintGuillaume, 75007 Paris). This is one of the greatest libraries in the areas of social sciences and politics. Every semester graduate students receive systematically an e-mail with practical information on how to use it. Tours can be arranged depending on the number of people signing up. 5.2 The Library of the Institut du Monde Arabe – IMA http://www.imarabe.org/perm/biblio_id.html (220 r St Jacques 75005 Paris) is an access free specialized research library key with a great multidisciplinary collection on Arab culture and civilization with emphasis on contemporary Arab world (in Arabic, English and French). It is key in terms of research in France and in Europe. 5.3 La Documentation Française Library & Documentation Center http://www.ladocfrancaise.gouv.fr/documentation/bibliotheque/index.shtml offers free access to scholars and students (29 quai Voltaire, 75007 Paris), its collections include the European Union collection, the World Bank depository library, the Centre de Documentation France, Europe, Monde with materials in a various languages and 3 offering dossiers covering up-to-date topics world wide. Reference librarians do a great job of user orientation and research help. 5.4 The Bibliothèque nationale de France – BnF – Site François Mitterrand, Rez-dejardin section http://www.bnf.fr/pages/zNavigat/frame/pratic.htm (Quai FrançoisMauriac, 75013 Paris) constitutes an extremely rich universe of scholarly materials. Although it presents the typical constraints of a big national library (need to register, reserve a seat in advance, online book request delivery in advance, staff may not be bilingual, etc.) it is an important reference; you may want to check it as last recourse. ALERTS: Mideastwire - a daily email alert featuring concise news and translated briefs covering key political, cultural, economic and opinion pieces appearing in the media of the 22 Arab countries, Iran and the Arab Diaspora. Register through e-mail for daily reception. Resource listed alphabetically under the feature ‘Find an Article (in databases’). 7. ONLINE PERIODICALS: The library has a core collection of printed periodicals in the periodical mezzanine, however the largest collection of periodical titles (more than 24,600 titles) are available through the library web page by going to ‘Browse a list of: Journals’ feature.
