NATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRELAND Founded in 1877, the National Library of Ireland was established as an independent state body on 3 May 2005. The Library is a legal deposit library holding very significant collections of material relating to Ireland’s documentary heritage, including printed books, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, prints and drawings etc. Applications are invited for the following Studentship positions: Studentships in the Department of Manuscripts / Office of the Chief Herald – 2 positions The Library’s holdings of manuscripts are extensive and include the papers of former landed estates, as well as political papers and literary archives. The Office of the Chief Herald has been a branch of the National Library since 1943 and the collections of the Office document the work of the heraldic authority in Ireland since 1552. The Studentships in the Department of Manuscripts / Office of the Chief Herald are open to graduates with good honours degrees in Irish history, English or Irish who are interested in gaining experience of working in the National Library of Ireland. The successful candidates will work directly with experienced Library staff on a variety of tasks related to collection management, reader and visitor services, and departmental administration. Learning/Exhibitions Studentship Based in the Library’s Department of Education, Outreach and External Relations (EOER), this Studentship will provide the appropriate candidate with the opportunity to work in a creative and innovative environment, developing new projects, working on collection interpretation activities, enhancing the learning experience for Library users and increasing uptake of the Library’s services by physical and virtual visitors. Marketing Studentship The Marketing Studentship in the National Library of Ireland is an exciting opportunity for a marketing graduate interested in the arts and heritage sector to gain direct experience in marketing a National Cultural Institution. The successful candidate will undertake a variety of duties in the Department of Education, Outreach and External Relations to promote the National Library’s collections and services, exhibitions and events. ICT Studentship – Software Development The Studentship holder will work in the Department of Information Systems to support the implementation, development and maintenance of various software packages, and to assist with the automated manipulation and conversion of library data. The position offers the holder the opportunity to gain experience with widely used technologies including Apache HTTP, Apache Solr, Subversion, MySQL, MS SQL Server, PHP, Javascript, XML, XSLT, JSON, and RESTful web APIs. The Studentship holder will also gain experience working as part of a team, and working to deadlines in a project environment. ICT Studentship – Systems Administration The Studentship holder will work in the Department of Information Systems to support the implementation, enhancement and maintenance of the National Library’s ICT infrastructure particularly in the context of working towards a digital library. The position offers the holder the opportunity to gain experience with widely used technologies including Red Hat Linux Operating system, Microsoft Windows Server Operating systems (Windows server 2003 and 2008), Oracle databases, SAP Crystal Reports, Ethernet and Wireless LAN’s.
