THE SNAILARIUM SUMMATIVE The purpose of this activity is to create a closed environment for a land snail. The organism will be studied and observations will be recorded over a 5-day period. Materials: one 2-litre colourless plastic bottle with a lid scissors and tape small sized gravel, soil and water living plants with roots other materials chosen by the student one live snail Method: Part 1: The Snailarium cut a 3-sided window out of one side of the clean bottle and lay the bottle on its side. insert all required biotic and abiotic factors then 1 snail. Tape the window shut. The bottle must be kept sealed to prevent moisture loss and to keep the snail in. Part 2: The Journal The journal section will include a daily entry for 5 days. The entry will: o be handwritten o use correct grammar and spelling o start with the date and time o include comments on both biotic and abiotic factors in each entry o research some information to include in your journal The journal will written in present tense have 3 or 4 well constructed sentences for each journal entry use proper scientific terminology This is a scientific journal. Do not give the snail a personality or emotions. The snail is not happy or sad. If you have given your snail a name, do not use it in your journal entries. Part 3: Research This will include o at least 3 printouts from the internet or photocopies from books or magazines concerning the garden snail’s habitat, behavior etc. o section from these printouts highlighted any information linked to this project o bibliography that includes any website used, title and author of and published material.
