Aquatic Intern Golden Gate National Parks, Marin (Fort Cronkhite) Part Time, Spring Semester 2013 (with potential for Summer Extension) Available only to students currently enrolled at SF State and CCSF Overview The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) is a destination for both locals and international visitors with its sweeping vistas, immense biological diversity, and unique cultural resources. With over 15 million visitors annually and over 80,000 acres of land, the GGNRA is the largest urban national park in the country. Located at the mouth of the Redwood Creek watershed in the community of Muir Beach, the Golden Gate National Park Conservancy (GGNPC) and GGNRA initiated an exciting wetland and creek restoration project that is slowly reversing the habitat impacts of past agriculture, recreation and construction activities. These past actions resulted in the loss of the original lagoon, wetland and creek habitats. Recent restoration actions have included rerouting the creek into its historic channel, placement of large pool-forming structures, creation of frog breeding habitat, and an aggressive vegetation management program to jump-start native riparian plants and control invasive plants. The restoration activities were to benefit three federally-listed endangered and threatened species- the California red-legged frog, coho salmon, and steelhead trout. Both GGNPC and GGNRA are committed to monitoring how restoration actions are affecting the status of these three species- both at the project site and within the Redwood Creek watershed. In addition, ongoing natural resource stewardship actions are needed to ensure that these populations reach self-sustaining levels.
