BIRTH OF THE ONTARIO DISTRICT
The Ontario District of the Barbershop Harmony Society (then SPEBSQSA) was
incorporated in Ontario May 28th, 1952 as the Ontario District Association of Chapters of
SPEBSQSA in the city of Toronto, Province of Ontario. Here are excerpts from the original
Letters Patent (available from the District Secretary).

MINISTER OF CONSUMER AND COMMERCIAL RELATIONS
AND WHEREAS it has been made to appear that the Corporation herein named
has complied with the conditions precedent to the issue of the desired supplementary
Letters Patent
NOW THEREFORE KNOW YE that, being the member of the Executive Council to
whom the administration of this act is assigned.
THESE SUPPLEMENTARY LETTERS PATENT GRANTED TO ONTARIO
DISTRICT ASSOCIATION OF CHAPTERS OF SPEBSQSA
Incorporated by the Letters Patent 28th of May, 1952
PROVIDE that, upon the dissolution of the Corporation and after the payment of all
debts and liabilities, its remaining property shall be distributed or disposed of to Canadian
charitable organizations.
GIVEN under my hand and seal of office at the City of Toronto in the said Province
of Ontario this

There were supplementary Letters Patent granted on May 1st, 1974, which
broadened the purposes and objects.
ONTARIO DISTRICT ASSOCIATION OF CHAPTERS OF SPEBSQSA
AMMENDED ITS PURPOSES AND OBJECTS TO READ
1. TO encourage and promote the education of its members and the public in the music
appreciation in the form of Barbershop Quartet and Chorus Singing and
2. TO initiate, promote and participate in charitable projects.
AND IT IS HEREBY ORDAINED AND DECLARED THAT:
1. the interest of a member of the Corporation shall not be transferable, and shall lapse and
cease to exist or when the member ceases to be a member by resignation or otherwise;
2. the directors of the Corporation shall constitute the Committee of Management of the
Corporation;
3. the directors may, from time to time, make bylaws and regulations, not contrary to law or
any provision of the Letters Patent or of the supplementary Letters Patent;

the admission of members and the appointment of trustees and officers

the time and place and the calling of meetings, and the conduct of such meetings

the control, management and conduct of the affairs of the Corporation
AND IT IS FURTHER ORDAINED AND DECLARED that the said Corporation shall be
carried on without the purpose of gain for its members and that any profits and other
accretions to the Corporation shall be used in promoting its objects.

SPEBSQSA applied for and was granted an ONTARIO MASTER BUSINESS LICENCE
(#221239726) authorizing the use of the name:
ONTARIO DISTRICT OF THE BARBERSHOP HARMONY SOCIETY
Note: the Master Business Licence must be renewed every 5 years
