Kerry’s Place Autism Services EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY #11-149 POSITION TITLE: AUTISM CONSULTANT LOCATION: KPAS Central West Region – Halton area SALARY RANGE: $19.75 – $24.68 per hour POSITION STATUS: Temporary Full-Time (Contract to March 31, 2012; the contract may be terminated early with two weeks of notice) HOURS OF WORK: 37.5 hours per week (days and evenings, flexibility required) CLOSING DATE: 4:30 p.m., November 17th, 2011 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Manager of Community Supports, the Autism Consultant will provide support to Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. The position is responsible for a wide range of services including: consultation to Individuals, families, agencies and community groups; service coordination to families, workshop development and presentation; intake role and direct support in various community groups. The Autism Consultant will work collaboratively with various agencies and community groups as well as working supportively with the Community Team. QUALIFICATIONS: The successful applicant will have experience working with Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families in community settings, and with community agencies, along with strong leadership skills, verbal and written communication skills, organization skills and the ability to work independently and as a team player. This position requires a good understanding of supporting Individuals within the family unit, and the ability to understand and support the Community Services Practices to support the KPAS Mission statement. Knowledge of Halton Communities and formal and informal resources, as well as the ability to work flexible hours including days, evenings and weekends are required. Post-secondary degree/diploma in Human/Social Sciences, or equivalent, and a minimum of 1 year experience working with community support services is required. Education in applied behaviour analysis and/or extensive experience working with children/adults with ASD utilizing an ABA approach; experience in working with families and building family capacity; experience in helping children and families set measurable goals and implement teaching strategies; experience working in a multidisciplinary team is required. Current CPI certification and crisis intervention skills are considered an asset. Current First Aid/CPR certification is considered an asset. Support in family support roles such as Family Support Groups and Sibling Groups The Autism Consultant will work collaboratively with various agencies and community groups as well as working supportively with the community services team. Other duties as assigned EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS: Education: Post secondary education in Human / Social Services Education in applied behavioural analysis and / or extensive experience working with children / adults with ASD utilizing an ABA approach Knowledge and Experience: Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities in a community based setting Experience working closely with families and with community agencies. Experience working with both children and adults with developmental disabilities Strong knowledge of and experience supporting individuals with ASD in community settings Good understanding of normal human growth and development as well as societal support to individuals with disabilities Good knowledge of respective communities and formal and informal resources Strong understanding of the principles of supporting individuals within the family unit and within their community is required. Basic understanding of Child and Family Services Act and responsibilities through this. Knowledge and practical experience with support approaches often found to be helpful in support to children and adults with ASD (ie. social stories / sensory needs / communication aids / applied behaviour analysis / environmental modifications) Understanding of basic family dynamics including grief processes, sibling issues, and importance of family and support for long term family capacity Experience in working with families and building family capacity Experience in helping children and families set measurable goals and implement teaching strategies Experience working in a multidisciplinary team Skills: Willingness and comfort with learning Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to work well both independently and within a team. Ability and willingness to work flexible hours Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle Basic computer skills such as Word, Outlook, and Internet Ability to set up support approaches, modify environments for the benefit of the child or adult with ASD Ability to develop and implement support approaches, model these approaches to family members, and then fade gradually all the while providing practical and emotional support to family and the child / adult with ASD.
