LUBY FAMILY GENEALOGY REPORT 121st LUBY REUNION
During the past year, 79 updates have been made to our Luby Family Tree. Most of the updates
consist of marriage information, birth dates, dates of death, occupations and military service to
name a few.
During the past 3 to 4 years my focus has been on making updates to our Luby Family Tree,
researching the many online web sites to close the gaps in our data, and contacting family
members to request specific information. As reported last year, I made over 1,000 updates to
our family tree. I would venture to say we now have close to 60% of the basic genealogy
information that is collected as a general standard by genealogists.
Over the next few years, I plan to continue working to close some of the information gaps in
our data but the primary focus will be to discover more about the story of William and Mary
Luby and their 6 children. We have a 1 page history that list dates and major events
surrounding the life of William and Mary Luby. I plan to build upon that page, add facts, and
document related information to compile a more complete history.
Before I talk about some of my research I would like to have David Crotty, our Luby Reunion
web site master, say a few words about some of the changes he is in the process of making to
the web site.

RESEARCH ITEMS OF INTEREST
William and Mary lived in Ottawa, Illinois, from 1834 through 1840. They had left one child,
Mary, who was born in Ireland in 1831 with William’s parents in Ireland. In Ottawa, William
and Mary had 3 children two died and the other was Anne Theresa Looby born in 1837. In
1843, two years after William and Mary left Ottawa, Illinois, a woman named Ellen Looby who
was born in 1824 in Ireland married William Connelly who was born in 1818 also in Ireland. The
marriage certificate lists the bride’s father as William Looby and mother as Mary Looby.
Ellen Sabina Luby who married John Gallagher was born in Sterling, Massachusetts, in 1848. I
could never find her birth certificate after a number of searches of Sterling, Massachusetts,
town records. In searching entries for the name Looby in Milford town files, I stumbled upon a
record showing Ellen Looby was born in Sterling but the birth was registered in Milford,
Massachusetts, on December 25, 1848. It states the father was William Looby and mother
Mary Looby conformation that William and Mary used the original spelling of Looby well after
they emigrated from Ireland. Ellen’s marriage certificate was also located and it shows she was
married to John Gallagher on February 8, 1872. Bride’s father is William Looby and her mother
was Mary Dignan Looby. John Gallagher’s father was Patrick Gallagher and his mother was
Anne Dhority Gallagher. Before Ellen was married it was reported in the 1870 U.S. Censes that
Ellen lived with her mother Mary Luby, worked as a sticher in a shoe factory, and that Mary had
over $600 in real estate and $150 in household goods.
Catherine Looby marriage record shows the bride’s father to be William Looby and her mother
to be Mary Dignan Looby. Note Mary’s maiden name was spelled Dignan and not Degnan.
Catherine was 29 years old when she married Nicholas Tierney 27 years old and was employed
as a boot maker.
