Heart Institute of East Texas 310 Gaslight Blvd. Lufkin, TX 75901 I. Introduction Heart Institute of East Texas (HIET) is the premier cardiology group located in Lufkin, Texas founded in 1982. HIET has a long history of first establishing new technologies and the state of the art cardiovascular care in Deep East Texas. HIET provides care for 13 counties between Houston, Tyler and Beaumont, Texas drawing from a population of about 250,000. II. Mission Statement: Mission Statement, in its original charter: “To provide a full continuum of high quality cost effective proactive diagnostic and therapeutic heart & vascular services. Heart Institute of East Texas will be identified as the premier cardiology group committed to serving and enhancing the well being of residents of the East Texas region. The physicians and employees will be committed to functioning as an integrated team and to providing responsive and compassionate care through local and outreach coverage in order to improve access to care and provide a high level of satisfaction among patients, referral sources, and third party payers. Quality of care and services will be identified and monitored on a continuous basis and constantly improved.” III. History Founded in 1982 by Dr. Ravinder Bachireddy, for the last more than 30 years, Heart Institute of East Texas has grown to be the leader in specialist cardiovascular services in the Deep East Texas region. Dr. J.C. Chandra joined soon after in 1984, followed by Dr. Hudson and Dr. Kovvali in 1994. Dr. Musa Khan and R. Khoshnevis joined the group in 1997 and 1998, followed by Dr. Mani in 2001. Dr. Gill joined HIET in 2007 and Dr. A. Siddiqui joined in 2009. Dr. R. Kedia is our latest team member who has replaced Dr. Khoshnevis as our electrophysiologist. IV. The Facility The Heart Institute has kept abreast with the latest state of the art, cutting edge technology in cardiovascular care and has been a vital service in reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in this region. Heart Institute has actively promoted public awareness of the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. HIET received certificates of accreditation for both echocardiography and nuclear cardiology and are the only certified Echo and Nuclear labs in this region. HIET also has the only cardiac PET Scan in this region. V. Cardiologists and Qualifications Heart Institute cardiologists: seven are Board Certified in cardiovascular diseases, 5 are Board Certified in interventional cardiology, 4 are board Certified in echocardiography, 4 are Board Certified in Nuclear cardiology, and one is Board Certified in Electrophysiology. VI. Heart Institute Cardiologists have been instrumental in bringing the latest technology to this area. HIET cardiologists have been pioneers in the field of cardiovascular care. Heart Institute cardiologists performed in the first cardiac catheterization, first PTCA, first coronary atherectomy, first defibrillator, and the first Roto Blator. The first coronary stent deployment in the entire East Texas region, including Tyler, Longview and Beaumont, was performed by HIET cardiologists. VII. Collaboration with the local hospitals to improve the quality of care Heart Institute cardiologists have been instrumental in developing not only the open heart programs of both Memorial Health System of East Texas and Woodland heights Medical Center, but also have been in the forefront to improve the quality of care at both hospitals. Both hospitals have received local and national recognitions in cardiovascular care from JCAH, the American Heart Association, and other organizations. VIII. Community Education Heart Institute physicians have played an active role in community education especially in preventing cardiovascular diseases. Several public education meetings were conducted at the Heart Institute of East Texas facility during the past several years. Heart Institute physicians also have conducted several seminars about prevention of cardiovascular disease at both hospitals, educating the physicians and nurses, as well as in the local community, including at the Women in Red Conference, Senior Citizens Place, Rotary Club, etc. IX. Philanthropy Heart Institute cardiologists have contributed significant free cardiac care for the indigent population at both hospitals and generously donated to several charitable organizations in Lufkin and Angelina County every year. X. Heart Institute Physicians as Leaders in Cardiovascular Care Heart Institute Physicians have been leaders in the medical community – they have served as President of Angelina county Medical Society, Chiefs of Medical Staff at the hospital, Chiefs of Cardiology, and Chairmen of Cardiac Cath Labs during the last more than 20 years. The present Chief of Medical Staff of Woodland Heights medical Center, the present Chief of Cardiology in both the hospitals, and the Chairmen of the Cardiac Catheterization Labs at both the hospitals are from Heart Institute of East Texas. XI. Recognition and Awards Heart Institute Physicians have received several awards and recognitions during the last several years for their work in cardiovascular care in the East Texas region.
