Sophie’s World Jigsaw: Philosopher Study Although everyone will be required to read “Bjerkely” and the last three chapters of the book, we will jigsaw, or break up the other chapters of Sophie’s World and share our understandings. This will allow us to cover the material more quickly and more effectively. Each student will investigate one philosopher in detail by reading the specific chapter from Sophie’s World containing the philosopher, and researching the philosopher through other academic sources. The format of your project will be Power Point. Your project must be able to stand alone, that is, you will not have an opportunity to present or explain your project. But, it should NOT be a research paper. Instead use charts, diagrams, graphic organizers and other means to make the presentation of information clear and efficient. Your project should address the following Research question: I am studying the philosophical project of (your philosopher’s name here) because I want to understand how his ideas contribute to Sophie’s Journey – what she faces, struggles to understand and overcome —in order to help my reader understand how Sophie manages to achieve her goal. This research question can be broken down into the following smaller questions. So, your project must address each of the following: What does she face, struggle to understand and overcome in the chapter? (chapter summary) Who is the philosopher: biographical info (when did he live, era, background, education, interests, accomplishments, etc.) What is the relationship between the philosopher’s ideas and those of Plato or Aristotle? What was his “philosophical project?” o What philosophical questions interested him most? o What are his major ideas, theories or answers to these philosophical questions? How do this philosopher’s ideas and theories contribute (or relate) to Sophie’s Journey: what she faces, struggles to understand and overcome? Your project must include a bibliography of your sources (including Sophie’s World) and at least three other reliable, credible, academic sources. Use noodletools.com or ezbib.com for accurate bibliographic citations.
