Background on Sunderland Health Champions
Health inequalities are a major issue throughout Sunderland. Not only are poorer
health outcomes experienced in Sunderland when compared with other parts of the
country, but also there are significant systematic health inequalities consistently
identified.
Gateshead Primary Care Trust • South Tyneside Primary Care Trust • Sunderland Teaching Primary Care Trust
In order to address this, Sunderland is leading the way in piloting a community
development project to reduce health difference from a grassroots level called the
Health Champion Programme.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of the programme is to improve the health of all disadvantaged communities
in Sunderland by developing ‘Health Champions’ to support local people in positively
addressing health determinants and accessing appropriate services.
Programme objectives include training front line staff, partner organisations,
community workers and volunteers working in Sunderland as they are best placed in
the heart of communities to offer support due to the long-established relationships
with residents, who are comfortable talking to them.
The training modules will support local people to live healthier lives, and equip local
workers and volunteers with the skills and knowledge they need to offer help, advice
and information on a number of health issues as part of their everyday work and give
them the knowledge to signpost to local services.
Five individual training courses of the Health Champion Programme are:
 Level 1: Tobacco Brief Intervention Training (non-accredited)
 Healthy Money, Healthy You (non-accredited)
 Level 2: Understanding Health Improvement (accredited)
 Level 2: Brief Intervention Alcohol Training (accredited & non-accredited)
 Promoting Emotional Health & Resilience Training (non-accredited)
Outcomes of the Health Champion Programme
 To ensure that front line staff, community workers and volunteers will be able
to provide basic brief interventions and signposting to help them take the first
steps towards healthier lives.
 Enable front line staff, community workers and volunteers to recognise health
issues and support their clients in tackling issues which are identified as wider
determinants of health, in particular emotional resilience and financial
capability.
 To not only benefit clients of those who participate but also the participants
themselves and their own families and communities.
 To ensure that we maximise the potential people have to adopt healthier
lifestyles by assisting to remove the barriers to making lifestyle changes.
 To ensure that people are able to offer a holistic approach to improving
health.
 To begin to build a systematic approach to tackling health inequalities in
Sunderland.
The contract will be awarded by mid March 2012 and will commence on 1st April
2012 and run until 31st March 2013. It is envisaged that any provider wishing to
submit a quote will provide a proposal to Nicola Grainger, Joint Commissioning
Officer at Sunderland TPCT before Tuesday 14th February by 10am. No quotes will
be accepted after this date and time.
