1 Tharu Scholarship Program: Rules, Policy and Procedures USA Tharu Scholarship Fund was established in 2007 by Tharus and Friends Association (TFA), USA, with a purpose to promote educational awareness within the Tharu community, especially in helpless and low income families, of Nepal. The fund shall be utilized exclusively to support the education of students of 10 + 2, undergraduate, and graduate studies. All Tharu students have equal rights to apply, but they must meet the eligibility requirements. Goals and Objectives: To promote educational awareness and excellence within the Tharu community. To encourage Tharu youths to pursue higher education. To provide financial support to socially deprived, poor, and intelligent Tharu students. To prepare academically competent citizen to help empower the community and the nation. Scholarship Announcement The scholarship shall be announced each year prior to or at the start of Nepali school year through email or any other reliable medium. Application Deadline It will be specified in the scholarship announcement. Quota per Year It shall depend on the availability of scholarship fund. It is aimed to support at least one student from each academic level of applicants. Scholarship Amount It shall depend on the availability of scholarship fund. Therefore, actual amount may vary each year. 2 How to Apply and What to Submit Download and complete the application form attached with the announcement notice. Personal statement (one page) – family background, interest, achievements. Mark sheets/academic transcripts that show student’s academic record or achievement. Two (2) references. Submit all above materials via email to TFA representatives stated in the announcement. Scholarship Granting Period Scholarship shall be granted for at least one year or until the end of the current academic program. Scholarship may be renewed for 2 or more academic years depending upon student’s study program and also the criteria set by the scholarship committee. Renewal may be pertinent only if the recipient’s academic performance is satisfactory (2nd Div. or better). Funding may be discontinued if recipient performs poorly or misuses the fund. Eligibility Requirements Must be Tharu. Must posses a good academic record in previous school levels/classes (2nd div. or better). Must be enrolled full time student at 10 + 2 or higher levels in an accredited institution. Must not be receiving any kinds of financial help from the Government and nongovernment organizations. Selection Criteria Intelligence - full-time student with good academic performance (2nd division or higher). Socio-economic condition - socially or economically deprived showing the need of financial help. Geographic region - Priority to students from relatively underdeveloped districts. Priority to female candidates. 3 Selection of Recipients The Executive Committee will have a full authority to select the most deserving students. The incomplete application will not be reviewed. Announcement of Recipients Scholarship recipients will be announced and notified by Executive Committee. Responsibilities of Scholarship Recipients Provide progress report (e.g. mark sheets/transcripts) of his/her studies once the exam results are out. Maintain satisfactory academic progress. The recipient may not change or interrupt the program of studies for which scholarship is awarded without the approval of the Executive committee. Provide contacts (email and telephone) to Executive Committee. Inform Executive Committee after each payment is received. Follow any other rules set by TFA Executive committee. Use of Funds The awarded fund can be used towards his/her education only, which will include tuition, stationeries, equipments, and living expenses. Mis-use of fund may lead to termination of recipients’ eligibility in receiving the scholarship. Termination may require dis-qualified recipients to pay back the amount he or she has received. Special Notes There will be a Scholarship Committee in USA and a Sub-Committee in Kathmandu to assist and facilitate the over all processes of scholarship program. The scholarship will be awarded annually based upon the decision reached by the Executive Committee. 4 The Executive Committee will be in no obligation to distribute funds if no application or suitable candidates are found. The Executive Committee will maintain all the records relevant to Tharu Scholarship, including fund collection, application, expenses, and distribution. The Executive Committee will meet/discuss as often as it is deemed necessary. The Executive Committee has an authority to modify the rules and regulations if necessary.
