The Eiffel Tower is an iron tower built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Universal Exhibition.
Located at the very end of the Champ-de-Mars, on the edge of the Parisian river, la Seine, this
symbol of France and its capital city is the third most visited monument in the country.
It was 300 metres high at first and was then made higher when a lot of antennas were placed on
top. Reaching 325 metres, la Tour Eiffel remained the highest tower in the world for more than
40 years. In the past used for scientific experiments, it is used today as a television and radio
transmitter.

The Arc de Triomphe de l’Etoile, known around whole world as L’Arc de Triomphe is located in
Paris on the Place de l’Etoile, at the very western end of L’avenue des Champs-Elysées.
The place de l’Etoile constitutes a huge roundabout from which 12 avenues emerge in all
directions. It was constructed during the 19th century by the baron Haussmann, prefect of the
Seine Department. The avenues create a star when viewed from above, with for instance the
avenue de La Grande-Armée, the avenue de Wagram and of course, the avenue des ChampsElysées.
This Parisian monument is 50 metres high and 45 metres wide.
Napoleon I ordered its construction in 1806.

La Grande Pyramide du Louvre 48°51’39.83" N 2°20’08.95" E
The Pyramide du Louvre is a glass and metal pyramid, located in the middle of the Cour
Napoléon of the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Ordered to be built by the President of the Republic François Mitterrand in 1983, the pyramid
was built by the Sino American architect Ieoh Ming Pei. The structure, built entirely from glass,
is 20.6 metres high on a square base of 35 metres. The pyramid consists of 603 lozenges and 70
glass triangles.

La Basilique du Sacré Cœur 48°53’11.80" N 2°20’34.63" E
The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, also called of the « Vœu Principal » (main wish), located at the
top of the Butte Montmartre, that overlooks Paris, was built after a decision taken by the
Assemblée Nationale on the 23rd July 1873, after the defeat of 1871 (Parisian civil war) to
“expiate the Communards’s crimes” as well as to pay a tribute to the French citizens that died
during the Franco-Prussian war. It was built by the architect Paul Abadie.

Notre-Dame de Paris is not the biggest french cathedral, but it is doubtlessly one of the most
remarkable examples of French gothic construction. It is one of the symbols of Paris and is
located on the extremity of the isle of La Cité, the historical centre of Paris.

The Palais Bourbon is the name given generally to the building which houses the National
Assembly of France (l'Assemblée nationale française), on the left bank of the river Seine.

The Cimetière du Père-Lachaise is the biggest cemetery in Paris and one of the most famous
worldwide. It is located in the 20th urban district and many famous people are buried there.

L’Hôtel de Ville de Paris 48°51’23.35" N 2°21’07.92" E
This is the municipal centre of Paris where all the municipal departments and institutions have
been housed since 1357. In winter the square in front of the municipal building is transformed
into a giant skating rink!

This Grand Palace is a Parisien monument situated along the Champs-Élysées, in the 8th district.
It covers 40,000 m2 and regularly hosts temporary displays and expositions.

La Grande Arche de la Défense 48°53’34.02" N 2°14’10.11" E
This monument is situated in the district of La Défense in the suburb west of the Paris city
centre. There are many high-rise buildings and office blocks here, higher than the maximum
allowed in central Paris.

Le Panthéon is a monument situated on Mount Geneviève, in the 5th urban district – in the heart
of the Latin Quarter. It is surrounded by the church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, the library of
Saint-Geneviève, the University of Paris, the municipality of the 5th district and the Lycée HenriIV. Originally a Church, Le Panthéon now houses the remains of great people who have made
their mark on the history of France. Pierre and Marie Curie, famous physicists, are buried there.

La Tour Montparnasse 48°50’30.47" N 2°19’19.86" E
This controversial high-rise office block is situated in the south-east of Paris. It consists of 59
floors with a restaurant and a terrace on the top floor for viewing the city. Its construction
spoilt the Paris skyline and 2 years later the building of skyscrapers in the central Paris district
was banned. It is often said, jokingly (or maybe not) that the best view of Paris can be seen
from the top of the Tour Montparnasse as it is the only place from which you can’t see the Tour
Montparnasse!

Les Invalides 48°51’18.03" N 2°18’45.28" E
The building of this monument was ordered by Louis XIV to shelter the wounded soldiers in his
armies. Today it still accommodates invalides but also several museums and a military sepulchre
where soldiers’ remains are buried.

Le Château de Versailles 48°48’17.15" N 2°07’14.17" E
This castle was the residence of several Kings of France: Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV and
Louis XVI. It is situated to the west of Paris in the city of Versailles. It is the symbol of the
height of French royalty – it is a great and grand castle with sumptuous rooms and an enormous
garden which is meticulously kept. The famous Hall of Mirrors is a great tourist attraction and
has recently been renovated. It covers 67,000 m2 and consists of over 2000 rooms.
