People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of a landfill compactor; prepare to operate a landfill compactor on solid waste; operate a landfill compactor for landfill operations; and complete reporting and documentation for landfill compactor operations. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Demonstrate knowledge of a landfill compactor. Performance criteria 1.1 The potential hazards of operating landfill compactors are identified and hazard controls are outlined in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and company procedures. 1.2 The mechanical functions of a landfill compactor are described in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and company procedures. Element 2 Prepare to operate a landfill compactor on solid waste. Performance criteria 2.1 Job requirements are confirmed in accordance with company procedures. Range 2.2 Operating area is checked for hazards and risks are assessed and controlled in accordance with company procedures and site requirements. Range 2.3 includes but is not limited to – location, cell size, recording. hazards include but are not limited to – working on slopes, other machinery, waste, dust. Prestart checks are demonstrated on a landfill compactor in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and company procedures. Range includes but is not limited to – fuel, lubricants, coolant levels, hydraulic fluid level, cleanliness, machine controls and gauges, blade, communications system. Performance criteria 3.1 A landfill compactor is operated within its capacity in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. 3.2 Solid waste is spread and compacted in layers in accordance with company procedures. Range uphill, downhill, to specified number of passes. 3.3 Communication is maintained with spotter and operators of other mobile plant during cell filling operations in accordance with company procedures. 3.4 Landfill cells are filled and compacted in accordance company procedures. Range 3.5 at least three days of operation. Utilities are not damaged by compactor operations. Element 4 Complete reporting and documentation for landfill compactor operations. Performance criteria 4.1 Reporting that gas risers require lifting is demonstrated in accordance with company procedures. 4.2 Routine servicing and maintenance of a landfill compactor are documented in accordance with company procedures. Range 4.3 Reporting that specialist maintenance is required for a landfill compactor is demonstrated in accordance with company procedures. Range 4.4 may include but is not limited to – radiator cleaning, belly cleaning, vehicle condition report, fuel issue. may include but is not limited to – batteries, fuel lines, coolant, hydraulic fluid level. Vehicle documentation is checked for currency and validity and any discrepancies are remedied and reported for further action in accordance with company procedures. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 23574 version 1 Page 4 of 4 Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP).
