Primary outcomes include reduced family conflict, aggressiveness and substance abuse, as well as improved youth social skills, parenting skills, and family communication and organization. The program is free of charge to participants. Childcare and transporation is also offered free of charge to those in need. The program is offered in Spanish for 14 weeks, on Tuesday nights (5:30 – 8), from August thru December at the Agnor-Hurt Elementary School. Duties include interpreting for families, providing first language support for teachers in the classroom, testing in Spanish, and direct instruction in both languages. Contact Susan Collyer for more info at 295-3171 *********************** C - AUGUST 22, 2007: LOCAL IMMIGRANT SOLIDARITY MEETING The People United is a Virginia based group currently focusing its energy on immigrant solidarity. Jeff Winder, one of its representatives, will facilitate a meeting on immigrant solidarity, local ordinances, etc. to brainstorm and network. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 22, from 6-7:30 pm at the Church of the Incarnation. It will be bilingual.Please contact Jeff or Rhonda to suggest agenda items, to indicate your interest in participating in such a group, or to advise them that you are coming to this first meeting: jeff@thepeopleunited.org; rmm@incarnationparish.org *********************** D - AUGUST 23, 2007: CJ PLENARY The next CJ plenary is Thursday, August 23, 2007, from 10 – 11:30 in Room A of the Albemarle County Office Building on 5th Street Extended. This plenary will be a roundtable and participants are encouraged to briefly share information about their Latino oriented initiatives, to request assistance from others, and to express concerns over issues Latinos face. With some exceptions, CJ Plenaries for the 2007 calendar year have been scheduled on the fourth Thursday of every month. Upcoming exceptions include the Friday September 21 plenary (Health Promoter Forum) and the Tuesday, October 30 plenary (Latinos & Mental Health Forum). For calendar year 2008, plenaries have been scheduled for the second Thursday of the month. Room A of the Albemarle County 5th Street Building have been reserved through December 2008.
