BROTHER MARTIN HIGH SCHOOL
COLLEGE COUNSELOR
The College Counselor is available to students and their parents throughout the student’s high
school years. Using scheduled class meetings and college handbooks for all four class levels,
parent meetings, and a sequence of college planning events the College Counselor seeks to engage
all students in the college admission process upon entry to Brother Martin High School. The
College Counselor serves as liaison between the student and the college admission office.
Specific responsibilities of the College Counselor include:














Prepare and print the College Handbook for Seniors, College Handbook for Juniors,
College Handbook for Sophomores and College Handbook for Freshmen.
Conduct meetings with freshmen twice in the school year. The fall meeting will inform
these students about College Day. During the spring meeting, freshmen will receive a
College Handbook for Freshmen and the introduction of the TOPS profile.
Conduct meetings with sophomores twice during the school year to review Career Day,
update each student’s TOPS profile, and hand out the College Handbook for Sophomores.
Conduct the College Planning Seminar with juniors in September. This includes a full
class period presentation for the students and a night meeting with interested parents of
juniors. (College Handbook for Juniors and folders given out.)
Participate in the Senior/Parent mandatory meeting at the start of the senior school year.
Conduct the College Application Seminar with seniors in August. This includes a full
class period presentation for the students and a night meeting with interested parents of
seniors. (College Handbook for Seniors and folders given out.)
Send a letter and supporting documents to parents of seniors prior at the start of school
that introduces the college application process and senior year.
Prepare a folder for each senior with his six-semester transcript, TOPS report and other
college application information.
Prepare a folder for each junior with his four-semester transcript, TOPS report and other
college planning information.
Conduct additional classroom meetings with seniors and juniors throughout the school
year to complement their college admission and financial aid and scholarship process
(specifically this includes, but is not limited to a meeting with both grade levels in January
to hand out updated transcripts and TOPS reports; for seniors, a May meeting to
complete the final transcript request forms; for juniors, a May meeting to update summer
college-planning activities).
Conduct a parent meeting for parents of 8th, 9th and 10th graders in the spring semester.
Update and print Brother Martin High School’s yearly profile.
Supervise the maintenance of student files used on the student’s transcript. (i.e. ACT &
SAT labels)
Schedule and greet college representatives when they come on campus to visit with our
students. Communicate with these and any other persons who represent a post-secondary
interest for Brother Martin students.













Prepare all articles for publication on the school web site that relate to the college
planning and application process.
Attend off-campus activities sponsored by colleges, universities, ACT, SAT, TOPS and
any other group that holds an interest with our students.
Carry out all responsibilities as Testing Coordinator: order all standardized tests (PSAT,
PLAN, EXPLORE, HSPT) and all registration materials for ACT and SAT. Coordinate
practice testings.
Serve as ACT/Test Site Supervisor for Brother Martin High School.
Organize and run COLLEGE DAY.
Organize and run CAREER DAY.
Organize and run a FINANCIAL AID SEMINAR for parents.
Meet with students and parents individually to provide assistance by reviewing personal
goals and direction for researching post-secondary education, programs and career
planning.
Make available current and relevant information and advice to students and parents
throughout the college research and application process.
Provide assistance to seniors with all procedures in the college application and financial
aid process, including but not limited to the following:
- copying and sending transcripts to colleges, universities, scholarship programs,
athletic coaches, the military and any other person, agency or group that requires
the student’s records for post-secondary plans
- completing secondary school reports
- writing letters of recommendation
- reviewing applications
- completing scholarship applications
- assisting with financial aid applications
- work with the Technology Specialist at Brother Martin High School for the
successful submission of transcripts to the Louisiana Department of Education
- field inquiries regarding TOPS
Supervise the preparation of transcripts and/or provide enrollment/graduation
verification on alumni and/or withdrawals of Brother Martin, St. Aloysius and Cor Jesu
High Schools.
Maintain files and resources on all scholarship, college, financial aid and career
information. This includes filed paper information, college catalogs, resource books,
mailed information posted on the College Resource Bulletin Board and available in the
College Resource Room and internet web sites.
Coordinate all scholarship information and scholarship or recognition nominations.

 Moderator of Best Buddies International Organization
 High School coordinator for the Archdiocese College Night Program
