The Duplin County Education Foundation Wallace Rose Hill Melissa Blanton Scholarship Established 2002 Scholarship ID# _______ I. General Information The Melissa Lynn Blanton Scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving varsity softball athlete from Wallace-Rose Hill High School. The student will be able to attend any institution of higher education to pursue their career goal. This scholarship is presented in loving memory of Melissa Lynn Blanton, former outstanding softball player at Wallace-Rose Hill High School. It was Melissa’s wish to assist student athletes desiring to further their education. The scholarship will be one time only for a value of $1,000. Once a student has been selected for the scholarship, the student must complete the Scholarship Verification Form and send a copy to the Education Foundation and the attending college. Upon receipt of notification of enrollment by the college or university, the payment will be made directly to the college or university. II. III. Application Procedures: 1. Any high school senior who meets the criteria may make application. Applications for the Melissa Lynn Blanton Scholarship may be obtained from the local high school principal, school counselor, softball coach/athletic director or online at www.duplinschools.net. 2. Applicants must be in good academic standing and require financial assistance to further their education. 3. Applicants must be an active part (i.e. player, statistician, manager, etc.) of the softball team during the senior year. An applicant criterion does not include participation in athletics at a higher level. 4. A copy of the applicant’s High School transcript is required. 5. An essay on “how softball has influenced my life” is required (maximum of 500 words). 6. Rank in class, overall grades, participation in extra-curricular activities and community service will be a consideration. Applicant must demonstrate qualities of commitment, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and desire both on and off the athletic field. 7. Three letters of recommendation must accompany the application when it is submitted (i.e. principal, school counselor, and teacher, someone who knows you well and can detail your character). A relative may not submit a letter of recommendation. Letters should be returned in sealed envelope with their name written across the flap. Selection Procedures: 1. Applications must be turned into the guidance counselor by the announced deadline. The Education Foundation will provide a verification form to be presented to the recipient. The verification form must be completed and returned to the Foundation. 2. The name of the recipient will be announced at the annual Wallace-Rose Hill Athletic Awards program at the end of the school year. A plaque will also be presented to the recipient by the Blanton family. 3. The name of the recipient will be given to the Education Foundation Scholarship committee at least one business day prior to the Education Foundation Scholarship Committee’s selection of Foundation Scholarships (TBA each year). The name of the recipient will be kept confidential until the announcement at the Athletic Awards program.
