Study Tour Code of Conduct
As a student enrolled in a Rider University study tour course (Program), I understand that
I am bound by Rider University’s Student Code of Conduct just as I would be while
taking classes on Rider’s Lawrenceville campus.
A. I understand that each foreign country has its own laws and standards of acceptable
conduct, including dress, manners, morals, politics, alcohol use, drug use and behavior. I
recognize that behavior that violates those laws or standards could harm Rider
University’s relationship with those countries and the institutions therein, as well as my
own health and safety. I will to the best of my ability become informed of, and will abide
by, all such laws and standards for each country to or through which I will travel during
the Program. I also understand that regardless of the legal drinking age in the foreign
country, Rider University prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from consuming alcoholic
beverages while participating in any Rider University Program.
Any behavior that Rider University’s representatives or officials deem to be minor
violations of this Code of Conduct but which are clearly disruptive to the Program, the
participants, and/or the professors of the Program and any behavior that has a clearly
detrimental effect on the local facilities and social relations of the group, will be
addressed immediately with a first warning. A second occurrence of a similar violation
will be punished by sending the student home at the student’s expense. Any behavior
that Rider University’s representatives or officials deem to be major violations of this
Code of Conduct may result in immediate expulsion from the Program.
Examples of conduct that would violate this Code of Conduct include: rude and
obnoxious behavior due to excessive drinking; drinking and/or storing alcoholic
beverages in hotel rooms; failure to adhere to any curfews established by the professors;
shouting or other loud expressions after hours in the hotel where the participants are
staying; excessive rudeness and behavioral disrespect to students or faculty in the
Program or to the citizens of the countries visited; engaging in illegal behavior such as
buying/selling/using drugs or other substances considered illegal in the United States or
in the host country; engaging in illegal buying/selling of currency on the “black market.”
B. I understand that Rider University policies, rules, standards and instructions for
student behavior apply while I am studying abroad. I understand and agree that any
violation of these policies, rules, standards and instruction for student behavior can result
in disciplinary action by Rider University including, but not limited to, the following:
expulsion from the Program and/or suspension or expulsion from Rider University.
Examples: Any student who violates the Rider University Academic Integrity policy
while studying abroad will be punished according to Rider University standards.
C. I waive and release all claims against Rider University that arise at a time when I am
not under the direct supervision of Rider University or that are caused by my failure to
remain under such supervision or to comply with such rules, standards, and instructions.
D. I understand that Rider University had the right to enforce the standards of conduct
described above, in section A, as well as its policies, rules, standards, and instructions for
student behavior in its sole judgment, and it will impose sanctions (which could include
expulsion from the Program), for violating these standards or for any behavior
detrimental to or incompatible with the interest, harmony, and welfare of the University,
the Program, or other participants. I recognize that due to the circumstances of foreign
study tours, procedures for notice, hearing and appeal applicable to student disciplinary
proceedings at the University will be carried out in the best possible manner under the
circumstances. Procedural hearing and appeals will be available upon my return to the
University. If I am expelled from the Program, I consent to being sent home at my
own expense with no refund of fees.
E. I will attend to any legal problems I encounter with any foreign nationals or
government of the host country. Rider University is not responsible for providing any
assistance under such circumstances.
I have carefully read this “Code of Conduct” form and agree to its terms.
