SALFORD ROYAL’S JANE MACDONALD INSPIRES AWARD
Salford Royal’s Assistant Director of Nursing Jane Macdonald is the
inspiration behind a national award to celebrate leadership role models within
renal services.
Jane is the first recipient of the Macdonald Leadership Award, named in her
honour, and presented to her by the British Renal Society (BRS) for the
wisdom and leadership she has shown throughout her term as President of
the Society.
Jane was the Society’s first non-medical President and held the role between
2009 and 2012. She received the award as a complete surprise as she
stepped down from the role at the annual BRS conference.
Dr Richard Fluck, Consultant Renal Physician at the Royal Derby Hospital
and the new President of BRS, presented the award to Jane.
He explained: “Jane was the first non-doctor President of the British Renal
Society. She’s been recognised for this award for her focus, drive and
leadership and to mark how well respected she is amongst the renal
community. In the future, this award will be given to people who have been
leadership role models like Jane.”
Jane, who lives in Bolton, said: “Receiving the award was a complete surprise
and I am still so overwhelmed. I have been honoured to lead the multiprofessional work of the British Renal Society as their President and it is an
enormous privilege to have this award named after me.”
Despite a very busy day job at Salford Royal, Jane has been instrumental in
developing and strengthening the Society and also working on national pieces
of work, for example with National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
(NICE) and the Kidney Alliance.
Following her training at Royal Bolton Hospital, her long career has included
posts as staff nurse, Peritoneal Dialysis Sister, Business Manager with the
Long Term Conditions Workforce Review Team, Clinical Nurse Specialist
Haemodialysis, Matron and Lead Nurse with Renal Services.
