Intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of an educational program. As such, it must be sustained by basic principles of ethical behavior that are intended to: Enhance the goals and missions of University of Wisconsin-Stout and Student Life Services. Tim is only the fifth WIAC athlete to receive the award. Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams both earn All-Academic status. The Blue Devil women posted a 3.50 grade point average, marking the ninth consecutive year and the 14th in the last 15 seasons Stout has received all-academic honors. Patrick Jenkins and Jessop Keene were named individually to the All-Academic team on the men’s team, who earned this status for the fourth consecutive year. The softball team was recognized as an All-Academic Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches of America (NFCA). As a team, Blue Devils posted a 3.45 GPA and ranked 21st of the 80 teams that reported a GPA of 3.00 or higher. Individually, eleven players received Scholar-Athlete honors. The UW-Stout men’s and women's track and field teams were recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for academic excellence. The Blue Devil women posted a cumulative GPA of 3.34 and the men posted a cumulative GPA of 3.15. The athletics department hosted their third annual Scholar-Athlete Honors Banquet, recognizing 23 senior student athletes with a grade point average above 3.50 and 75 underclass student athletes. For the third consecutive year, the department hosted their Athletics Honor Day. Patrick Jenkins claimed medalist honors at the WIAC meet and teammate Jessop Keene placed closely behind in second. Both went on to earn All-Region honors and qualified to the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championship. Football Stout finished the year at 4-6 overall, 2-5 in the WIAC. The War on I-94 trophy returned to Menomonie after the Blue Devils defeated UW-Eau Claire, 35-27. Freshman running back Adolfo Pacheco was one of nine Blue Devils placed on the All-WIAC football team along with offensive linemen Devon Greiber, and David Reyes and defensive lineman Jamie Rohrig, place kicker Ricky Marteney, who leaves as the second leading scorer in school history with 217 total points, quarterback Hank Kujak, wide receiver Trevor Morning, linebacker Luke Bakkum and defensive back Tyler Naatz. Baseball The baseball team earned a berth into the WIAC Tournament for the first time since the 2007 season, posting a 20-21 overall record and twice knocked off eventual national champion UW-Whitewater in league play. Junior Jack Schneider set a school record for most doubles in a season with 17, while junior Ryan Freitag tied the school record for most home runs in a season with 15, finishing second in the NCAA in home runs. Freitag, freshman pitcher Zach Carlson and sophomore outfielder Brady Burzynski were first team all-WIAC choices, with Brent Mueller earning an honorable mention nod. . Men’s Basketball The Blue Devil men’s basketball team (12-14, 7-9 WIAC) defeated eventual national champion UWWhitewater at Johnson Fieldhouse and dropped a one-point decision to top ranked UW-Stevens Point. Adam Wadzinski drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to down UW-La Crosse. Senior Aaron Jenny earned all-WIAC men’s basketball honors, while seniors Alex Oman – who scored his 1000th career point this season - and Jimmy Whitehead were honorable mention selections. Men’s Golf Blue Devil golf team was basically a new club, with six newcomers and five freshmen on the squad. The team started off the season at Edgewood with their best finish of the year, placing fourth out of sixteen teams. At the end of the year, junior Blake Lentner led the team with an average under 78. Hockey The Blue Devil hockey team (8-18, 4-8 WIAC) was a virtually new team from the previous year, with 14 newcomers. Junior Zach Vierling was a first team all-WIAC pick. Junior Jordan Tredinnick and senior Logan Maly earned honorable mention…Stout twice this season defeated eventual national runner-up UW-Stevens Point. Coach Terry Wakins marked his 700th career game as a Blue Devil head coach. 4|Page Men’s Track and Field Senior Zach Anderson won the 2014 national indoor championship in the heptathlon, freshman Nick Lubinski (long jump, triple jump) and junior Patrick Jenkins 3000 and 5000 meter runs, earned AllAmerica honors. Lubinski won the WIAC triple jump title and Jenkins won the WIAC 3000meter…Outdoors, Anderson wins his third consecutive decathlon title and led one of the largest contingent of Blue Devils to the national outdoor championship in more than a decade. Freshman Sam Elsner and junior Austin Zett both earned All-America honors in the discus. Patrick Jenkins earned AllAmerica honors in the 5000- and 10,000-meter runs and won the WIAC titles in both events. Anderson also was a first team Academic All-American. Women’s Track and Field Senior Jessika Smith, the Midwest Region field indoor performer of the year and the WIAC scholarathlete, finished second in the pentathlon at the NCAA national meet and sophomore Meagan Ward finished fourth, both breaking the school record. Outdoors, The 4x400-meter relay team of Laurisa Titterud, Jessika Smith, Jada Hamilton and Meagan Ward broke the school record and became the first UW-Stout women’s relay team to earn All-American honors with a fifth place finish at the national meet. Smith defended her WIAC heptathlon title and set a school record in the event with a second place national finish. Smith broke outdoor school records in the 100-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles and the javelin. Ward was second in the heptathlon at the WIAC meet and placed sixth at the national meet. Women’s Basketball The Blue Devil women's basketball team (11-5, 7-9 WIAC) put together a four game winning streak to close out the regular season and earned the fourth seed in the conference tournament…Senior Sami Schoeder earned WIAC honorable mention honors, as did sophomore Kyleigh Hebert and junior Katelynne Folkers, who also was named to the WIAC all-defensive team. Women’s Cross Country Led by stronger freshmen and sophomore classes, the Blue Devil women’s team improved three places at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regionals in November. Team earns all-academic honors for ninth consecutive year. Women’s Golf The Blue Devils placed a school best three individuals on the 2013 All-WIAC women’s golf team. Junior Brittany McNett-Emmerich, a 2012-13 All-American, repeated to the All-WIAC first team. Second team selections went to juniors Mariah Chesley and Megan Ramp. As a team, Stout recorded four of the lowest six rounds in school history. Stout finished second at the WIAC Women’s Golf Championship, with McNett-Emmerich finishing second. Howie Samb was selected as the WIAC coach of the year for the fourth time. Alex Westman earned the Judy Kruckmann Scholar-Athlete award. Gymnastics Junior Katherine Prouty earned four gymnastics All-America honors, placing second in the all-around at the NCGA Championship, setting a school record (38.55). Prouty, who also won the WIAC vault title for the second time, earned All-America honors on the vault, uneven bars and the balance beam, placing fourth in each event…Prouty wasn't the only Blue Devil to break school records. As a team, Stout set a new team mark (188.65) and freshman Kasondra Tulloch broke the school uneven bars record (9.75). 5|Page Soccer The Blue Devils finished third in the league, their best finish since the 2005 season. While Stout completed the season at 8-9-1 overall, they went 6-2-1 over the last nine games. Four Blue Devils earned first team All-WIAC selection, senior defender Emily Ferger, sophomore midfielder Jenna Kizlik, sophomore goalkeeper Paige Meyer and freshman forward Lauren Kizlik. Softball The Blue Devil softball team carried a 12-1 record in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and hosted the conference tournament for the first time since 2002. The Blue Devils’ 27-12 overall record was the best mark since the 2004 season, with a school record 14-game winning streak over the latter part of the season. Sophomore Tori Workman earned WIAC pitcher of the year honors, recording a school record 160 strikeouts. Coach Chris Stainer was named the WIAC coach of the year. Senior catcher Sam Hastings and sophomore outfielder earned first team all-conference honors. Junior shortstop Lynzi Knudtson, senior first baseman Hannah Sweet and junior designated player Taylor Workman were honorable mention picks. Tennis Paul Mitchell returned to UW-Stout as the head coach of the women’s tennis team. Mitchell was an assistant tennis coach at Stout from 2004-06 and took over as the head coach this fall. The Blue Devils moved up one spot at the WIAC Women’s Tennis Championship. Volleyball The Blue Devil volleyball team finished with a 15-15 overall record as junior setter Karley Wiensch was an All-WIAC honorable mention selection. Morgan Denny was an academic all-district selection. The season was also the final season for head coach Jill Jolliff, who announced her resignation at the completion of the season. Jolliff is the winningest volleyball coach in school history and compiled a 363-319 record over 21 seasons…Laura Evans was hired as new head coach to replace Jolliff. Community Thousands of volunteer hours were completed in the campus and community in support of making UW-Stout, and Menomonie a better place. Many, many people who benefit from our involvement, and it has a huge impact on our student-athletes. Listed below are some events that our Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) were involved in. This does not include our individual team volunteer hours. This is what our teams have done together! (SAAC) events: 3 food drives at various games, volunteered at the Special Olympics Run From the Cops, Fall and Spring Campus/Community clean ups, Bell ringing for the Salvation Army, donated money for “gifts to families” during holidays, “Holiday Mail for Heroes” thank you notes sent to military currently serving overseas, Polar Plunge, volunteered at Special Olympics regional basketball tournament, hosted Kid’s Night Out, Dunn County Humane Society volunteers, and the Wakanda Elementary Walkathon 6|Page 2013-14 Athletic Department Initiatives and Progress Our number one goal each and every year is to improve the student-athlete experience. Everything we do revolves around this goal. Roll out the Blue Devil Fund in 2013-14. Continue to develop and plan events and alumni functions both on and off campus in conjunction with the Development Office and others in the fundraising field. Develop the vision and share the knowledge with our alumni and friends in different ways. Blue Devil Fund- 101 overall donations, raised over $27,000. Number of donations is poor considering the number of athletic alumni that we have, but it is a start. Five athletic alumni events were held, with close to 100 alumni and friends attending. Brewers game, Twins game, minor league baseball games, San Diego. Summation – much improved relationship with Foundation and a good start with the Blue Devil Fund. Increased local sponsorships in the amount of over $22,000 dollars. Total of $49,000. Continue to improve our overall marketing and game day promotions and increase our overall attendance and game day involvement of fans with the campus and community. Attendance saw a slight increase 6% (due to a change in our tracking methods. Addition of video boards to Johnson Fieldhouse added to the game day experience for our studentathletes and fans. Televised football and women’s basketball games on Fox Sports spread our brand and overall campus branding across a 5 state area. Brett attended the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Menomonie and currently serves on the Young Professionals Steering Committee. Co-hosted Menomonie Business After Hours. Develop an operational manual for our coaching staff to be used with orientation of new employees during the hiring process. Improved awareness of NCAA rules with staff. Operation manual is being utilized in current and future hires, and will be updated as needed to reflect campus and UW System policy changes. Manual needs to be put together. Three staff meetings and 3 head coach meetings in which NCAA and WIAC rules were discussed. Implemented a monthly NCAA rule reminder email with rules interpretations and potential violation situations that is shared with all staff members. Continued with staff requirement to take the NCAA recruiting rules test each year and be certified in CPR and AED training. Increased student-athlete support of each other and other teams within our department. All-sport fall picnic, alumni panel, leadership presentation, scholar-athlete banquet, senior awards banquet, Competition between teams to attend 1 game from each of the sports, hosted conference softball tournament with help from many other programs 7|Page 2014-15 Athletic Department Initiatives Our number one goal each and every year is to improve the student-athlete experience. Everything we do revolves around this goal. Roll out the Blue Devil Club in 2014-15 to match up with the Blue Devil Fund from 201314. Remove individual sport booster clubs and put it under one umbrella, managed by our athletic administration. Goals are to alleviate coaches from the pressure of season tickets, apparel distribution and management of each club. Evaluation method - # of members, and amount of funding raised through club memberships and season ticket sales vs. 2012-13 individual club numbers. Develop and implement an NCAA and WIAC rules education master plan for the campus. Involves many people. Staff members of the following areas, Vice Chancellor, Provost, Chancellor, Admissions, Registration and Records, Financial Aids, Athletics, Dean of Students Office, Advisement Staff. Evaluation method- attendance, participation numbers Conduct an in-house NCAA Title IX Athletics self-evaluation. Evaluation method- report completed and results and recommendations shared with Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, FAR’s, and Athletics staff. Increased overall campus and community support of Blue Devil Athletics. Create a point system for students to receive merchandise based on attendance at athletic events. Evaluation method- overall attendance, student attendance and ticket sales.
