Course Objectives: Upon completion of Principles of Healthful Living, the student will be able to: 1. Develop healthy lifestyle behaviors 2. Provide current material that is related to multicultural and gender perspectives in health 3. Enhance the quality of life in various topics 4. Include practical real life applications to material presented in text that encourages students to apply to their own lives Required Texts: 1. Health: The Basics, Eighth Edition, Rebecca J. Donatelle Evaluation: It will be possible to accumulate 400 points this semester. There will be no individual make-up exams given unless prior notification of conflict is given. The points will be distributed as follows: Quiz (4)………………………25 points each Mid Term & Final(Dec. 10)…50 points each Current Events (1)……………25 points Journal Entries (5)……………20 points each Participation/Attendance…….75 points Exams and quizzes may include multiple choices, fill in, matching, and short answer. Cheating on any exam will result in an “F” in the course and a letter sent to the Dean of Student Affairs detailing the situation. **Student Code of Conduct(Section 9803.28) Academic Dishonesty will not be tolerated! The final course grade will be based upon the following point totals: A=360 and above…………..(90% and above) B=320-359…………………(80-89%) C=280-319…………………(70-79%) D=240-279…………………(60-69%) *Late work will result in deduction of points Attendance/Participation: Attending class and participating in class discussions, projects, and working out is very crucial is receiving full points. If you miss more than three (3) class meetings you may not receive a letter grade of “A”. Extra Credit: I will give one extra credit assignment. I will tell you during the semester what and when the assignment is due. Withdrawal Policy: Withdrawing from any course is the responsibility of the student. The instructor will not do it for you! Key dates to remember: Sept 9: Last day to declare credit/ no credit option Last day to drop without a “W” Nov 18: Last day to drop with a “W” *Any students remaining on the roster following the official drop date must receive a letter grade in the course! It is the student’s responsibility to drop the class. Important! Drop Date Information The deadline to drop without a “W” is the last day of Week 2 (of the semester), which is Sunday, September 9th for Fall 2012. If you must drop a course, drop before the specified deadline for dropping a class without a grade of "W." Dropping after Week 2 will result in a “W” on your transcript. Effective July 1, 2012 students will only have 3 attempts to pass a class. If a student gets a "W" or grade of "D", "F", “I”, or "NP" in a class, that will count as an attempt. A student’s past record of course attempts district wide will also be considered. Therefore, before the end of Week 2 you should carefully consider if you can reasonably manage this course with the other factors in your life (e.g. work, family, course load). If you think you will not be able to complete this course with a C or better, drop by Sunday, September 9th. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to talk to me.
