Teacher: Let’s read a letter which Tony has written to his pen pal, Shala. What does he tell her?
Date ______ errors Date _______ errors
Tony wrote a letter to his pen pal. This is what
He wrote: Dear Shala,
Have you ever seen a farm? This summer, I
visited one. I saw a fox run across the barn
yard. The farmer said the fox was after his
hens! The farmer’s dog tried to catch the fox.
But the fox was quick. He zipped back into the
woods. Then I visited the chicks that had
just hatched. They were chirping and hopping.
They were so cute!
Next, I looked at a mule pulling a cart. The
cart was loaded with hay. This hay was for the
Farmer’s ox. The ox was glad to see the hay.
He tapped a hoof on the barn floor.
I think I would like to be a farmer when I
grow up. I like taking care of hens and chicks.
Maybe I could run a zoo! What would you like
to do when you grow up?
Your pal, Tony

The Lost Puppy
Words:124
RL:1.9
Scott was in a hurry as he ran down the steps
from his apartment. He was going to play with his
friend Matt. Scott flew down the sidewalk, but
as he passed the alley something made him stop.
Scott saw a paper bag. It was moving. The paper
bag bumped into a trash can. The paper bag
rolled down the alley. The paper bag ran into a
wall. What was in the bag? Suddenly, two paws
poked out of the bag. Then a little head popped
out. It was a puppy! It was his friend Martina’s
puppy! Scott picked up the puppy. “I’ll drop you
off on my way to Matt’s,” he said. “I thought you
were a hamburger that had come to life.”

Passage for Fluency 2
A Flat Tire
Words:114
RL:1.9
Tanya rode down the hill on her bicycle. She
went faster and faster. The wind rushed past her
face. Tanya loved to ride fast. At the bottom of
the hill, she heard a loud pop. Her front tire
wobbled and she started to slow down. Tanya’s
bike went slower and slower until finally she rolled
to a stop. She got off her bike and looked at the
front tire. It was flat as a pancake. She must
have hit something sharp at the bottom of the
hill. Tanya began pushing her bike back up the
hill. She would go home and fix the flat. It was a
lot more fun on the way down.
