Conference Series Origins of Slovenians Fourth International Topical Conference ANCIENT INHABITANTS OF EUROPE First Announcement and Call for Papers Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2006, June 9th and 10th Venue: Slovenian World Congress, Cankarjeva 1/IV, Ljubljana, Slovenia 2 Ancient Inhabitants of Europe The early history of the European nations is still not well known. The aim of the conference is to discover and disclose historical, linguistic, cultural and other sources of information about the ancient inhabitants of Europe, taking into account various aspects, which can contribute to an improved knowledge of the events in the distant past. The core of the conference should be archaeological facts and written documents, toponyms, genetic traces, beliefs, mythology, legends, customs and other data which could help to reveal the organisation, communications and cooperation of the ancient inhabitants in Europe during particular epochs of the distant past. What is expected and most welcome is to elucidate the changes of the living conditions and activities during the last Ice Age, after it, as well as the whole historical period BC and during the first millennium AD. It is important to bring forward all the significant characteristics of the ancient population, which can still be established today in the genetic records, linguistic similarities and other features, which are either preserved in the original or changed forms. Main topics Archaeological traces Pre-Indo-European developments in Europe Indo-European development up to the Urnfield culture Urnfield culture, its beginnings, evolution and extension Subsequent evolution up to the year 700 AD Linguistic traces Inscriptions in the languages of ancient peoples Linguistic thesaurus of ancient settlers Slavic-like toponyms compared in sound and meaning to Slovenian Other linguistic traces Historical, cultural, ethnological and genetic traces Documents and other written sources Narrative oral transmission, folk songs, myths, legends National traditions, customs and others Genetic traces Other traces Other contributions that would help to clear the issue are also welcome.
