Put the title
Elizabeth’s Middle Way
in your exercise book.
Read the information on the webpage, then:
Task One
1. Working in a group of four, discuss Source 1: ‘How Elizabeth seemed to adopt a Middle Way’.
2. Learn the information so that you can remember it without looking at the webpage.
3. Play a game to rehearse the information. One of you takes the role of a Catholic, one a
Protestant, and one Queen Elizabeth.
 Taking it in turns, the ‘Catholic’ and the ‘Protestant’ say what they believe; then the other
contradicts them.
 Then ‘Queen Elizabeth’ says: ‘From now on you will both…’ and tells them her Middle Way.
 Do this for all nine beliefs.
 The fourth member of the group scores all three players on how well they have remembered
the information – the player with the highest score wins.
Task Two:
1. Working on your own, do the worksheet: ‘Elizabeth’s Middle Way’.
2. Working with a partner or in a small group, do the acrostic: ‘Elizabeth in Danger’.
3. Coming together as a whole class, discuss:
 How much of a ‘middle way’ was Elizabeth’s ‘Middle Way’?
 Did Elizabeth become more Protestant as her reign went on?
 How successful was Elizabeth’s ‘Middle Way’?
 Was Elizabeth ever in real danger?
