EGR 101 INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING THROUGH APPLIED SCIENCE I
AUTOMOBILE LIGHTING SYSTEM
PHASE 1 --- BASIC LIGHTING SYSTEM
Design a circuit that simulates the exterior lighting system of an automobile. Two
miniature lamps will be used to represent the headlights (one on each side). Four RED
LEDs will be used to represent the taillights and brake lights (two on each side).
Your system will be powered by 12 Volts, derived from the power supply in your
breadboard.
Using Multisim, draw the schematic of your system. Use a SPST switch as the main
switch to turn on the headlights and taillights, and a Normally Open push-button for the
brake pedal switch.
When the main switch is closed, two lamps should turn on (simulating the headlights)
and two RED LEDS should illuminate (simulating the tail lights). Note, if any one bulb
should fail, none of the others should go out.
The other two RED LEDs will be used to simulate the brake lights. The Normally Open
push-button switch will mimic the brake pedal. When the switch is closed (brake pedal is
pressed) the brake lights (LEDs) should turn on, independent of the head and tail lights.
Show the Multisim circuit to the instructor to verify your design.
Once the circuit is verified, build the system and demonstrate its functionality.
PHASE TWO --- ADDING THE HIGH BEAM
Modify your Multisim circuit design by adding two additional lamps and an additional
switch to the circuit in order to simulate the high beam.
As before, when the main switch is turned on, the original low beam headlights and the
tail lights should turn on. The brake lights should turn on when the push-button is
pressed. When the additional switch is turned on in the modified circuit, the high beam
should turn on.
The high beam should be able to turn on only when the low beam is switched on but
should turn on whether the low beam is “burned out” or not.
Show your modified circuit to the instructor. Verify your design by demonstrating in
Multisim that you can turn on the high beam and at the same time press the brake switch

to turn on the brake light. Put a Title Block on your schematic and fill in the appropriate
information before printing.
Build the system and again demonstrate its functionality.
WHAT’S TO BE HANDED-IN
A printout of your Multisim schematic (after addition of high beam circuit) with your name
and other information in a Title Block.
