Page 1 of 5 Grade 11 College Process for Parents Preparations Complete the following preparations prior to introducing the activity to students: This activity focuses on the attached PowerPoint Presentation. The session activities below follow the sequence of the slides. Review the Grade 11 College Planning Process PowerPoint presentation and practice your delivery. Make copies of Power Point Presentation (print as Handouts 3 or 6 to a page) to distribute to students and their parents. Obtain handouts from College Planning Center of RI (Get most recent edition and make copies). Secure large room. Send mailing to parents to inform them of meeting dates. Secure computer, projector, screen. Obtain refreshments for attendees (if possible). Step Responsibility Action Steps 6 Counselor Reviews resources available to parents and students to gather information about colleges. 7 Counselor Reviews the application requirements and guidelines for ensuring the application packet has the essential materials for mailing. 8 Counselor Describes techniques for producing an essay for the college application. 9 Counselor Describes the process for determining who the student should seek letters of recommendation from and how each letter should describe who the student is based upon the experience the student has had with that individual. 10 Counselor Reviews additional factors that could help to influence a positive outcome (e.g., interviews, tours, portfolios, auditions, videotapes). 11 Counselor Defines the types of outcomes that may occur as result of review of the student’s application (acceptance, deferral, wait listed, denial). 12 Counselor Describes for students and parents what financial aid is and types of aid available. 13 Counselor Describes the process for beginning to apply for financial aid and forms required. 14 Counselor Describes for students and parents the resources available for seeking financial aid. 15 Counselor Describes the requirements that student athletes may need to consider if interested in playing a sport at the college level.
