800 BC to 700 BC Celts build first hill forts. Celts lived across most of Europe until the

Roman invasions

55 BC Julius Caesar raids the south east of England after conquering Gaul (modern day

France and Belgium). They return to continent for winter because of bad weather

54 BC Julius Caesar launches a full-scale Roman invasion of Britain. He withdrew again because of problems in Gaul and bad weather

43 AD Roman invasion of Britain ordered by Emperor Claudius

410 AD There were raids by Angles, Saxons, Picts & Scots. Britain appealed for help from

Roman Emperor which was refused as the Romans were trying to save their crumbling Empire and Britain was considered a not very important outpost of the Empire

449 AD Traditionally known as the date when the Anglo-Saxons invaded Britain (date given by the Venerable Bede in his history book written in 731 AD)

685 AD The Picts defeated the Anglo-Saxons in a battle and took control of Scotland

789 AD First recorded attack by the Vikings in Dorset

795 AD Viking raids in Scotland and Ireland

800 AD During 9 th century there were four kingdoms making up modern day England -

Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia and Wessex.

829 AD Kingdom of England established when Egbert, king of West Saxons (Wessex) took

Mercia & Northumbria

843 AD Picts & Scots unite to form Kingdom of Scotland

867 AD Vikings raided York and killed the rival kings of Northumbria

869 AD Vikings moved into Mercia & East Anglia and Edmund the king of the East Angles was killed

878 AD Wessex overrun by Vikings

886 AD Alfred, king of Wessex agreed division of England with the Vikings and Danelaw was introduced – Danish (Viking) and English were equal in law

1066 AD Norman conquest of Britain. King Harold was killed at the Battle of Hastings and

William the Conqueror (William of Normandy in modern day France) became king

2010 AD Today descendents of the Celts live in Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man,

Cornwall and Brittany in France
