'Writing by Writing' - An ILN (Instructors Learning Network) Event

May 9

11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Please join us for a luncheon with Award Winning local writer Sarah Willis of John Carroll University. Our topic will be “Writing by Writing: an effective approach to writing instruction.” Attendees will participate in a real writer’s workshop and leave with the skills to conduct a writer’s workshop for their clients. Incorporating writing workshops in the literacy classroom gives students the motivation to write. This will be a unique forum for learning to edit writing.

Becoming Culturally Competent: Diversity Awareness Training for Literacy Providers

May 16

9 a.m. - Noon

This three-hour session will increase participants’ sensitivity to and awareness of all aspects of diversity.

Instructors and tutors will receive information and skills to meet the needs of a diverse student population, and literacy providers will learn strategies to recruit and maintain a diverse volunteer team. All participants will share challenges and experiences, explore diversity topics from personal and professional standpoints, and learn and practice strategies regarding effective cross-cultural communication.

Classrooms without Conflict: Using Discipline to Help Children Succeed

June 6

This workshop will provide effective strategies to decrease classroom conflict and build children’s confidence and skills. Participants will explore the relationship between children’s self-esteem and behavior problem, and also learn to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy self-esteem. Learn classroom strategies that help prevent behavior problems while teaching positive social skills and citizenship. Attendees can receive three Ohio

Department of Education (ODE) credits and Step Up to Quality Professional Development Credits.

Helping Students Overcome Personal Barriers to Learning

The classroom is a place where trust and care is developed, and instructors and tutors are often called upon to listen to students’ needs and issues. Yet they may lack the skills or knowledge of resources to best assist students.

This two-hour session will teach participants how to respond to student issues that affect learning and persistence. Attendees will:

Gain tips on how to be sensitive to realities different from their own

Learn how to provide helpful feedback and support in response to student self-disclosures

Understand how to access and direct students to helpful community resources, and

Practice new skills by role-playing with other participants

Reaching More Families: Practical Ways to Promote Family Literacy

July 18

9 a.m. - Noon

Designed for early-childhood teachers, this workshop aims to help increase family literacy rates though innovative, hands-on and cost-effective classroom instruction techniques that impact the entire family at home.

Learn how to address difficult family situations that affect attendance and increase student retention rates. Form connections with other early-childhood educators to share ideas, resources and strengthen program offerings.

The workshop attendees will depart with instructional tools and resources for immediate implementation, and can receive three Ohio Department of Education (ODE) credits and Step Up to Quality Professional

Development Credits.

Managing Aggression in the Classroom

July 25

9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

This four-hour session will address causes and strategies to tackle aggression in the classroom. Attendees will learn to deescalate situations that threaten the learning environment or safety of other students and instructors/tutors. This training will help participants:

Understand what can cause a student to get agitated and act-out in the classroom

Become aware of various ways we communicate and learn to do so more consciously

Provide tools to help you deescalate a volatile situation and recognize when you should NOT engage, and

Apply these new tools in role-playing scenarios

Adding Workforce Skills to GED Instruction

August 15

9:30 a.m. - Noon

Getting a better job motivates most adult students to work towards attaining the GED certificate. But how well are they prepared for this better job after they have completed their studies and taken the test? Integrating important workforce skills into GED classes could prove the best strategy for improving students’ odds for success. This two-hour training will demonstrate how to incorporate various job readiness tools and strategies into current literacy materials to make learning more relevant to students’ goals and to help build their job readiness skills. Instructors will also be given information to increase their awareness of employer expectations.

Numeric Literacy: Practical Ways to Instruct Mathematics for Adult Learners

October 17

9 - 11:30 a.m.

Math often is a challenge for both students and instructors. While many of us can arrive at the correct answer, we

can't explain how or why. Instead of only focusing on the mechanics of mathematics, we should also be familiar with mathematical concepts. Attend this two hour interactive workshop and obtain experiential learning techniques to help adults learn and retain numeric concepts. The workshop will review current adult learning theory, and participants will acquire new methods to teach numerics in the classroom. Attendees will leave the workshop with sample lessons plans and activities which can be immediately implemented with students.

Cancellation policy: Canceling two to three business days before a workshop opens slots up for interested individuals, should we have waiting lists. It also allows the Literacy Cooperative to continue to provide quality training in cost efficient ways. Please contact us if you will not be able to attend a workshop for which you have registered.
