Living Museum Assignment Due: Friday, May 22nd, 2015 Students will research to learn about a person from the past who made a difference. (Attached to these instructions is a sample list to choose from.) Each student will dress up like that person and be a part of a “Living Museum”. Parents and other students will come to visit our museum to learn about these people. Each museum student will wear a button for the visitors to “press” to hear about the life of that person. Step 1: Choose a person for our “Living Museum.” (Due by Thurs., Mar. 26, 2015) In order to not have any duplicates, students should select 5 people, in case the first choice is not available. This list is a sample and not necessarily complete. If you wish to select a person who is not on this list, write the person’s name on your selection sheet and turn in a short paragraph explaining who this person was and why you chose this person. (The sooner you return your selection paper, the better your chances of receiving one of your first choices.) Step 2: Go with an adult to the library or on-line to research information about this person’s life. You should find out: - Birthdate and deathdate (if not living) - Where the person was born and lived - Information about the childhood of that person - How that person made a difference - Other interesting facts about that person’s life - Character qualities of that person: perseverance, self-discipline, responsible, caring, curious, respectful, citizenship, courageous, integrity, etc…. Step 3: Write a simple biography (story about that person’s life) in the first-person point of view. Be sure to include the information from above. This speech should last from 1 to 3 minutes. (Show the rough draft to your teacher by Friday, May 8th, 2015.) You will take it back home the same day. Eg. My name is Helen Keller. I was born…. Step 4: At the end of your speech (biography), be sure to explain how that person is remembered, using descriptive character qualities. If this person showed courage, also include that information. Step 5: Create a timeline of the person’s life, noting the important events of his/her life, as well as important events in the history of that time period. Step 6: Put your written report together. It should include a title page, which includes the name of the person you researched, your name, and date. After the title page should be the written report (speech in first person) that you will be memorizing. Next, should be the timeline. At the end, include a simple bibliography, stating where you got your information. (This report may be typed or hand-written. If it is typed, the student should do the typing.) Staple these papers together with one staple in the upper left corner or put it in a report folder, not a binder. Step 7: Make note cards for yourself to help you remember your biography. The note cards should not be a rewritten copy of the biography, but rather some NOTES to help you remember what to say. You should be able to glance at them if you forget something. Step 8 (OPTIONAL/HELPFUL): If you would like to create a poster or other props for your museum exhibit, you may. These might help you to tell your biography or answer questions that visitors may have. They also might make your exhibit more interesting.
