MEETING 2915 MERI KING Interplast program Sponsoring Surgeons Interplast a non-profit organisation was established in 1983. The main organisations in the group are the Royal College of Australian Surgeons and Rotary advisors. The HQ is in East Melbourne. From small beginnings where surgeons take leave from their Australian medical practice and go for three weeks to some of the countries and islands in the Pacific. Since then Interplast has stretched to North of Australia, into Nepal and the now into Bhutan. DFAT granted Interplast full accreditation so that funding can be upheld on a permanent basis. Currently funding comes from: Rotary 59% Australian organisations 23% Individuals 7% and International organisations 3%. Since Interplast began there have been 37,000 consultations and 22,000 procedures. Interplast only goes to countries where they are invited and the number of requests far exceeds the available time. As a specialist is doing a procedure he teaches and supervises trainees from the local area. Interplast is committed to teach and improve local surgeons’ skill. For an Interplast team to go to a country the costs range between $35k and $70k. It is not uncommon for 250 people come to a clinic and only about 60 people can be treated during the time when Interplast is there. Cleft palates, burns and tumours are the main problems. Meri showed slides of before and after treatment: eg Two young girls were born with cleft palates and their lives, would, without treatment be one of ostracism and rejection, but a later picture showed after recovery two smiling girls who had a bright future ahead. Burns account for 22% of procedures. As there is a lack of knowledge many victims are badly scarred and their damaged limbs are practically useless. Surgeons have been able, in many instances, able to operate and aid victims to get their limbs mobile again. It is a wonderful program but there are high costs for it to continue. Volunteers are needed. Clubs and individuals are needed. Club and individual donations to Interplast can be made to ensure its humanitarian work continues. Thank you Meri for a confronting, challenging and informative talk. CLAIR’S WORK HISTORY When I was 6 I was left an orphan . What kind of idiot leaves an orphan to a 6 year old?
