Basic Language Courses These courses are designed for students who wish to obtain or to develop the basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These courses are not open to students who are functionally fluent in Chinese. It is important to the academic experience of each student that they be placed at the appropriate level and in the class best suited to them. Each student’s background will be evaluated by the Program to decide what placement is best for that student. CHN 1150 and CHN 1151 CHN 1150 and CHN 1151 are both first-level, beginners’ courses. They are taught at the same time using the same textbooks, etc. The only difference is in the learning environments designed for different degrees and kinds of previous exposure to Chinese. The main purpose of the distinction is to make the students’ experience more productive and enjoyable. CHN 1150 Students with no previous cultural or language background might take CHN 1150. There is slightly more attention given to correct pronunciation and ease in listening/speaking. Character recognition has priority over writing. CHN 1151 Students who have had almost no exposure to Chinese might take CHN 1151. For example, if you know some Chinese by heritage, travel, or other experience, but you have never properly studied Chinese language to this level. The Special Permissions procedure will determine what is best for your particular background. CHN 2250 Students who have successfully completed CHN 1150 or CHN 1151 at Huron or have taken equivalent courses elsewhere may be placed in CHN 2250. Such courses may include OAC Chinese, a Heritage Language program, Saturday language school, tutorial at home, etc. The Special Permissions procedure will determine what is best for your particular background. CHN 3350 Students who have successfully completed CHN 2250 at Huron or have taken equivalent courses elsewhere may be placed in CHN 3350. Advanced Language and Culture Courses Taught in Chinese These courses are designed for students who have already mastered the core language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Course instruction, activities, and readings assume fluency in the language and help the student to prepare for certification or to explore specific aspects of Chinese language and culture through intense textual study, research, analysis, and exercises. There is no formal placement procedure for enrollment in Advanced Courses. These courses are open only to students who are functionally fluent in Chinese. CHN 2240F and CHN 2241G Understanding Chinese Business Culture I & II These courses offer an intensive study of contemporary language and socio-cultural issues through topics related to domestic and international business in China. CHN 2242F and CHN 2244G Representative Works in Chinese Literature These courses offer a survey of major works in traditional or modern/contemporary Chinese literature. CHN 2245F and CHN 2246G Cinema in the Chinese Mainland and in Taiwan and Hong Kong These courses examine representative films produced in major historical periods in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. CHN 2247G Chinese Cities and Chinese Culture This course will explore the city’s form and function as “an aesthetic symbol” in Chinese culture, through case studies of ten major Chinese cities. CHN 3340a and CHN 3341b Business Chinese I & II These courses will help students develop knowledge and skills specific to Chinese business communication. CHN 3345a Improving Communicative Skills in Standard Chinese This course aims at improving students’ competence in understanding and using spoken and written Standard Chinese. CHN 3346b Improving Chinese Pronunciation This course is for students who speak Cantonese or Fujianese and have an intermediate level of reading and writing proficiency. Students will improve their pronunciation through study of the Chinese phonetic system and practice of correct intonation, rhythm and accentuation. Prerequisites: Chinese 3345a/b or permission of the department (please contact the course instructor). Stream C. Chinese Culture and Literature Courses Taught in English You can register in these courses, as you would in any other course at Western.
