The Diabetes Team aims to provide high quality care in a timely manner, catered to individual needs, and to enable patients to feel confident in working with us to manage their condition and improve their health. Consultants Dr Aftab Ahmad BSc, MBBS, FRCP (UK), MD (UK), PG Certificate (Teaching & Learning), PG Certificate (Healthcare management) Consultant Diabetologist and Endocrinologist, Clinical Director, Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinical Sub-Dean and Honorary Senior lecturer for Liverpool University. Dr Ahmad graduated in medicine from Punjab University, Pakistan in 1987 and undertook training in diabetes and endocrinology in Cardiff, NewcastleUpon Tyne and Mersey deanery. He obtained his MD in 2004 for the study of the effects of growth hormone replacement on bone metabolism in growth hormone deficient patients. He was appointed as consultant diabetologist and endocrinologist in 2002 and has been clinical director for diabetes and endocrinology directorate since 2007. In addition to general diabetes and endocrinology his areas of special interest include weight management in patients with diabetes, transitional endocrinology and medical education. He developed novel models of delivering care, aimed to maintain high standards of practice and reduced risk while provide clinical/cost effectiveness and has led his team to the team of the year award in 2010. As the Sub-Dean he has been instrumental in improving undergraduate teaching programs with his innovative methods of providing excellent teaching & guidance such as introducing novel annual student-led Clinico-pathological conference, developing and organising Interface course for final year medical students, and streamlining medical education and F1 training. Professor Jiten Vora BSc, MBBS, FRCP (UK), MD (UK), Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist Hon. Professor, Professor Jiten Vora is Consultant Physician/ Hon. Professor within the diabetes/endocrine team at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the University of Liverpool. He qualified from the University of Cambridge, and undertook substantive training in diabetes/endocrinology as a Research Fellow and then Lecturer at the University Of Wales College Of Medicine. He then undertook a period as Fulbright Senior Fellow at Oregon Health Sciences University. He has been a Consultant Physician at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital since 1993. He has served on many advisory panels, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, and the Diabetes and Renal National Service Frameworks. Prof Vora has on-going research interests in the development of/ screening for/ treatment of diabetic retinopathy; renal haemodynamics /function and hypertension in Type 2 diabetes, the prevention of renal disease in diabetes and the physiological aspects of treatment of Type 2 diabetes; mechanisms of osteoporosis. Dr Philip J Weston, MBchB, MD, MRCP Consultant physician and diabetologist Departmental lead for insulin pump services Dr Weston qualified from Leicester University in 1987 and trained in medicine and diabetes and endocrinology at Leicester and Liverpool before taking up a lecturer post at Liverpool in 1997. He was appointed as a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology at Royal Liverpool University Hospital in 1998. He completed his MD from Leicester University in 1997 entitled ‘Cardiovascualr Autoregualtion in IDDM Patients’. His areas of main interest include insulin pumps, cardiovascular autoregulation and autonomic neuropathy in patients with diabetes and in particular the ‘dead in bed’ syndrome. He is leading one of the largest insulin pump services in the UK and has been running national training courses on insulin pumps. He has been the Director of post graduate education and the Foundation training programme director at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital for more than 10 Years. He is currently the Programme Director for Diabetes and Endocrinology, and Medical Ophthalmology in the Mersey Deanery. He was trained in medicine and diabetes and endocrinology at Mersey region before taking up a consultant post at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool in 2009.
