Lesson Name & Overview: Family Treasures: Developing Generic and Individualized Word Banks to build sight word recognition Time: 15 – 20 minutes, ongoing throughout dual language book project Objectives: Language Learning Objectives Vocabulary: Key/core words selected from Family Treasures for study and acquisition; varies from class to class. Concept Objectives Learning Strategies The theme work has both ‘generic’ vocabulary and individualized vocabulary. Flash cards for both types of words will help build/automatize word recognition of this key vocab. Visual memory Initial letter-sound recognition Grammar (form): Functions: Materials: Template for Treasure Chest (one per child), markers, scissors, glue, construction paper of cardstock (one per child) word strips Teaching and learning tasks: 1. Have children color their own ‘Treasure Box”. Assist them to cut out the template around the edges, leaving the strip of paper along the top of the box attached. Cut between the lid and the bottom of the box. Fold the top flap down toards the back of the lid. Blue along this flap and attach to the construction paper, so that the lid is able to open and close. Glue around the sides and the bottom of the box, line up against the lid and glue down. 2. Write or have the children write the key words about their treasure on the word strips and slide them into the treasure box. Extension, recycling, practice: 1. Practice words from their treasure box to reinforce their ‘personal treasure’ words. 2. Keep these word banks at school for the duration of the Family Treasures project and work with them regularly to reinforce and build sight word vocabulary and phonics skills. 3. Use the word strips/vocabulary flash cards for a variety of games you can improvise to recycle and practice the core vocab from this thematic unit.
