JOB DESCRIPTION Post Title: Teaching Fellow (Maternity Cover) Institute: National Heart and Lung Institute Division: Cardiovascular Science Job Family and Level: Professional Services, Level 4 Salary Range: £41,830 to 50,570 per annum (pro-rata) Responsible To: Course Director Key Working Relationships: Programme Leader, Course Coordinator, E-Learning (Internal) technologist, teaching faculty members Key Working Relationships: Masters-in-Science (e-learning specialists) (External) Contract: Part-time (0.33 FTE and fixed-term until August 2014) Location: St Mary’s Campus Short courses/CAS and MSc in Preventive Cardiology Programme This programme in Preventive Cardiology is delivered by an interdisciplinary team of academic staff from the National Heart and Lung Institute, together with senior clinicians in cardiology, nursing, dietetics, physiotherapy, pharmacology and clinical psychology from Imperial College Health Care NHS Trust and visiting experts in the field of cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation. This programme is aimed at physicians, nurses, dieticians, physiotherapists, physical activity specialists, sports scientists, pharmacists, psychologists and any other health professional with a role in prevention of cardiovascular disease. Students will learn about the theory of preventive cardiology and the application of evidence based principles to real world clinical practice. The programme covers the complete spectrum of preventive cardiology from patients with established atherosclerotic disease, the relatives of patients with premature atherosclerotic disease and asymptomatic people, including those with diabetes, at high multifactorial risk of developing this disease. The scientific foundation of this programme is lifestyle change (smoking cessation, healthy food choices and physical activity) through behavioural approaches, together with weight management, medical management of blood pressure, blood lipids and blood glucose and use of cardioprotective drug therapies. The practical application of research methods and statistics to preventive cardiology will be taught. Summary of Post As Teaching Fellow, you will be providing specialist teaching and research expertise in nutrition and weight management to the Short Courses / CAS and MSc programmes in Preventive Cardiology. Duties and Responsibilities Provide specialist input to curriculum design and marketing Head a leading-edge specialist module in nutrition and weight management that will attract top experts and students from all over the world Co-ordinate the delivery of the course syllabus for nutrition and weight management Facilitate the development of specialist clinical observation opportunities Provide the assessments, examination and marking in relation to nutrition and weight management content Support examining and marking in the core compulsory modules Undertake academic and personal tutoring Supervise specialised research projects; provide support for the interpretation and cleaning of data; identify problems and facilitate the development of solutions Monitor and evaluate student progress in the specialist subject of nutrition and weight management Monitor, evaluate and develop specialist course content to be consistently leadingedge and of leading status in quality and the student experience Contribute to strategic planning for the future development of the department Work towards raising the profile of dieticians in research and care delivery Ensure the delivery of the nutrition and weight management components of the course is achieved within the set budget, with regard to staffing, equipment, development costs and printing of materials Co-ordinate the selection and purchase of specialist dietetic physical measurement equipment and learning resources as well as any medical equipment that may be required for student projects, within the funding allocated Develop educational materials in line with the programme evaluation, in conjunction with the other specialists in the multi-disciplinary research team Keep up to date with state of art knowledge in the specialist field of preventive cardiology and ensure application to the development of programme initiatives To observe and comply with all College policies and regulations, including the key policies and procedures on Confidentiality, Conflict of Interest, Data Protection, Equal Opportunities, Financial Regulations, Health and Safety, Imperial Expectations (for new leaders, managers and supervisors), Information Technology, Private Engagements and Register of Interests, and Smoking. IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON PERSON SPECIFICATION Qualifications: Essential Full Dietician qualification with current registration to the Health Professional Council Bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics You should have, or be working towards, a higher degree in a relevant speciality Knowledge and Experience: Essential Experience in research in the field of preventive cardiology Substantive clinical experience in nutrition and weight management in cardiovascular disease prevention and rehabilitation Substantive experience as a cardiovascular specialist dietician (acute care and work in cardiac rehabilitation and or preventive care) Evidence of learning in theory of behavioural medicine and health promotion Evidence of learning in management Knowledge of clinical governance and clinical effectiveness Understanding of team dynamics and experience of working within a team Understanding of the NHS Understanding professional ethics and their application in practice Desirable Membership of national and European professional Societies Teaching qualification Skills and Abilities: Ability to competently use medical equipment used within the programme (blood pressure monitors, breath carbon monoxide monitors etc) Counselling skills Ability to teach adults Proven IT skills including the ability to use advanced features of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint and willingness to learn new software applications such as for academic reference management Good communication skills, both verbal and written, are required in dealing with staff of all levels and students Excellent organisational skills Excellent attention to detail Excellent interpersonal skills A high degree of tact, confidentiality and diplomacy Ability to use own initiative and work independently without direct supervision, and as part of a team, as required Ability to be proactive and show initiative in proposing and carrying out new administrative procedures Excellent judgment of which matters or decisions need to be referred to other staff members Ability to organise own workload, adjusting to changing priorities on short notice Ability to prioritise and multi-task efficiently Ability to work under pressure while maintaining a high degree of accuracy Willingness to help members of staff with various tasks as they arise on an ad-hoc basis Proven skills at problem-solving and overcoming administrative obstacles An open, flexible and positive approach to working in a dynamic environment, as part of a multi-site academic institution Desirable Proven numerical skills and experience at monitoring expenditure against budget
