INTRODUCTION
LINCOLN is first a name of a place, then names of persons born or residing in
Lincolnshire, England and their descendants. There is a Lincoln Castle and a
Cathedral there. The name goes back to the time of the Roman occupation, which
was established about 86 A.D.
From DIRECTORY OF THE ANCESTRAL HEADS OF NEW ENGLAND FAMILIES 1620-1700:
"A place name from Lincoln, Eng; shire-town of Lincolnshire. The
name is derived from <lin> in the Gaelic, Welsh and
Cornish-British, which signifies a pool, pond, or lake, and
<coln>, a ridge or neck of land, so called from its situation, as
Lincoln occupies the top and side of a steep hill on the river
Witham. The Anglo-Saxon word <lin> and the Roman word <colonia>
meaning colony, makes Lincolonia, finally Lincolnshire."
The name, while it was being successively abbreviated to LINCOLN has preserved,
remarkably, the silent letter "L" that shows its Roman origin.
Persons there were known as "de Lincoln" and as the population grew they were
forced to take other names, many changed names with the almost entire exception
of all but the Bishops and the Earls. SO--do we descend from Bishops or from
Earls???!!!
The first recorded use of the place-name LINCOLN as a family name appears in the
DOMESDAY BOOK in 1086.
There were eight Lincolns who came to New England from Lincolnshire in the early
1600's, some were brothers and all are believed probably related to each other.
Nearly all who came to New England settled in Massachusetts. Names of Boston,
Hingham, Cambridge and other town names were brought with them from Lincolnshire
and Norfolk Counties in England. At one time there were 4 Thomases in the
Hingham area and 4 Daniels in Taunton, MA at the same time. In Massachusetts
there were 130 different families of Lincolns in 1790.
Abraham Lincoln, The President, descends from Samuel Lincoln, born 1619 in
Hingham, England, who came to Hingham, MA in 1637.
Since NY State had poor records in the early days and people were passing
through rapidly, we are unable to connect with the Massachusetts Lincolns, but
are sure we connect in some way. Nearly all censuses say that Apollos' was born
in Massachusetts.
We and others (Arlynn Gantz, Katharyn Mulvaney, Charles Clements) have been
searching on this for over ten years. We have recorded here the names as we
have collected them. They are not all complete lines and most is oral record,
and not all documented. One side of the page is blank for your recording
further info, and you may add sheets for your line.

APOLLOS LINCOLN1, known here as "Sr" was probably born in Massachusetts,
probably died in Madison County or Wyoming County, NY. Believed to be the
Apollos Lincoln in Hoosick, NY censuses of 1800 and 1810. Lived in Madison
County, NY in 1813 where he was drafted for the War of 1812. His son,
Apollos2 (1797), went as his substitute.

Johnsonburg Village, NY lies part in Sheldon and Orangeville Twps. Wyoming
Co. History of Wyoming Co., NY page 268 says in part -"Lyman Tuttle came to
Johnsonburg in 1814. At that time there were five log houses and a shanty
there... Isaac Lamb built the first framed house... In the early days there
was a public burying ground opened in Orangeville near Johnsonburg. No deed
was ever given for the land and the farm containing it changed hands and the
ground was not preserved... About 1830 Isaac Lamb opened to the public a
half acre of land nearly half a mile southwest from the village for burial
purposes. The first interment was that of Mrs. Isaac Lamb. In the year 1830
most of the bodies in the old Orangeville graveyard were transferred to
Johnsonburg."
* In as much as we are unable to find the death of Apollos Lincoln1 we
wonder if he was buried in the above Orangeville cemetery and perhaps later
moved to the Johnsonburg Cem. as Apollos2 Lincoln, Jr. and Deborah Drew were
married in Orangeville in 1817 and apparently Susan2 Lincoln met Andrew Lamb
in the same area. Also, Caleb2 Lincoln married Elizabeth Palmer from this
area.

lived for 32 years on the same farm. He gave ½ acre of land [along with

-44Noah3 LINCOLN, born 16 June 1822, went from Cass Co., MI in 1855 to Fillmore
Co., MN with a team of oxen, which took 9 weeks. In the winter of 1856-1857
they existed mainly on buckwheat ground in a coffee mill. Later he paid
$5.00 for a bushel and a half of corn. He took a government claim in
Fillmore Co. and later sold it and purchased 219 acres in neighboring
section 1 of Wilton Twp. in Waseca Co. where he lived until his death.
Francis, his oldest son, died in the Civil War and the second son, Charles,
carried on the farm. Charles was born in Cass Co., MI and married Mary
Pomeroy in 1885 in Jackson, MI then returned to MN. Had no male
descendants.
Noah served on the first jury ever convened in Waseca Co. in 1857 and was a
pioneer member of the "HORSETHIEF DETECTIVE SOCIETY" organized in 1864. On 3
July 1876 there was a double wedding at Noah's residence of two of his
daughters to two brothers. Elva Lincoln married A. D. Scullin and Louisa
Lincoln married I. F. Scullin.
Emma (Davis) Lincoln died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. D. Scullin in
Duluth, MN on 24 June 1912. She was buried next to her husband in Wilton
Cemetery in Waseca Co., MN.
Apollos4 LINCOLN, named for his grandfather, born 18 October 1853 in
Michigan went to Waseca Co., MN in the fall of 1875 and resided there until
4 July 1883 when he married Matilda Hollander of Wilton and settled in
Mankato until they returned to MI in 1897 and lived in Gratiot Co., Mecosta
Co., and finally retired in Marshall, MI. He learned to drive a gear-shift
car at age 80.
excerpts from letters he wrote home:
26 January 1877 ...I was down to Morristown 15 miles north of here chopping
wood for cousin Charles... we live in a shantie, 12 by 20. Aunt Em keeps house
for us... Times is dull out here but good slaying, snow 16 inches deep and
awful cold...
8 March 1880 I got a McCormick self binder, it cost me $307.00 and an Owatana
seeder costing $60.00, a new drag at $11.00, a new breaking plow at $22.00, and
a sulky corn cultivator for $30.00,...
10 March 1880 ...Charles was elected constable yesterday at the town meeting...
Aunt Em and Charles have gone to Waseco today... Love to all inquiring
friends...

"Lest we forget…"
Austin3 Lincoln was born one hundred fifty-two years ago, on 7 October 1831
in the Town of Orangeville (Township as we know it), Genesee County (in an
area that is now Wyoming County), NY. His father was Apollos2 Lincoln, Jr.,
who was a farmer. His mother was Deborah (Drew) Lincoln. Austin was the
seventh of eight children in their family and the youngest son.
About 1835, when Austin was but four years old, Apollos Lincoln removed with
his family to Jackson County, MI. There they lived for a short time in
Sandstone Township, later settling permanently in Tompkins Township of the
same county. It was here that Austin Lincoln lived most of his life.
Michigan was very young in 1835, two years before statehood. Life was
immeasurably hard by today's standards. The forests had only begun to be
cleared for farmland. Austin must have worked long hours with his father on
the farm. Yet we know that he was literate (not common in those days), so
it is likely that he also attended school.
On 3 June 1854, Austin married Rachael Elisabeth Florence in Albion, Calhoun
County, MI. She was the daughter of Peter and Catherine Florence of
Sandstone Township. It is not known why they went to Albion to be married,
both being of Jackson County. But to them were born three children: Charles
R., who was born in 1856 and died one year later; Ida M., born in 1859; and
Austin C., Jr., born 1 July 1862.
On 16 July 1862, shortly after the birth of his youngest son, Austin
volunteered for service in the Union Army in the Civil War. Both he and his
brother Charles would die as a result of this terrible conflict. Both were
assigned to the 4th Regiment of the Michigan Cavalry.
Austin enlisted in Jackson for a three year term of service. His signature
on the enlistment papers is clear, and he spelled his last name as we do
today. He was described as having blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion
and being 6 foot tall. He gave his age as thirty years. His regiment was
mustered-in at Detroit in August 1862 and sent south to Kentucky.
On 3 September 1862, Austin wrote a letter home from a camp near Louisville.
He mentions that his Company is serving as the bodyguard for the Colonel and
that there is fighting nearby every day. He speculated that the war would
soon be over because the rebels were almost out of arms. He said that he
was well but that his brother Charles was not. He detailed in vernacular
terms of his run-in with a suspected rebel spy and of the hardships of army
food.
By November 1862, Austin was somehow wounded and sent to the Union hospital
in Mitchelville, TN. It is not known whether his wound was directly the
result of combat. His wound became infected and he was sent to the hospital
in Gallatin, where he died 27 January 1863. His death was listed as caused
by erysipelas, or “Red Death” as it was known at the time, an acute febrile
infection easily treated by today's modern antibiotics.

Dennis Lincoln, my Grandfather, died Jan. 18, 1888 at
Sickles in Gratiot Co. MI. He had been in poor health
quite some time and prior to his death asked my father,
Charles Lincoln, to promise that; when the time came his
body be taken back to Jackson Co., for burial in the
Lincoln Cemetery, Tompkins Twp. This was to be done by my
father driving Grandpa's team of horses of which he was so
proud. This, my father promised to do.
Just before this journey started there was a terrible
blizzard making roads which were not much more than trails,
nearly impassable. My father, a teen-age brother, Dill
Lincoln, Grandma (Catherine) Lincoln, Aunt Susan Lincoln
Johnston, her two year old daughter Grace, and teen-age
neighbor, John Waterman, started out on this hazardous
journey with the horses and sleighs which took two days.
Many times they had to stop and hold their hands over the
horses' nostrils to thaw the icicles which prevented
breathing through the nose. Breathing cold air into the
lungs through the mouth could have caused pneumonia as they
labored through the deep snow.
The first night was spent at a hotel in Maple Rapids
and the second one with my mother's brother, John Gress,
near Aurelius. They arrived at Aunt Mary Lincoln Gordon's
early of the third day. As soon as the burial services
were over, my father and the two young men immediately
started homeward, taking another two days and experiencing
the same difficulties as before.
My mother, Mary Kress Lincoln, anxiously awaited
their return as of course there was no way of communication
at that time. It had been a cold and dangerous undertaking
but: My Dad, a true Lincoln, kept his promise.

DREW
Deborah DREW, wife of Apollos2 Lincoln, Jr. (b. 1797) was born 1796 in NY,
maybe in Orangeville where they met. Other Drews there at the time were
Nathaniel, Gilbert, John, and William. We have not been able to connect her
with these.
DECKER
Catherine DECKER, who married Dennis3 Lincoln was the daughter of William
DECKER born 1797. The first record of this family is in Groton, Tompkins
Co., NY where "Hattie" was born. In 1843 he and family lived in Steuben
Co., NY and that year relocated in Onondaga Twp., Ingham Co., MI. Other
Deckers in the area were related to her.
LOSEY
William Decker's wife was Mary Frances "Polly" LOSEY, born 1808. It is
believed many of her relatives moved here from Steuben Co., NY. Henry LOSEY
of Kinneville, Onondaga Twp., Ingham Co., MI, was known to be her brother.
Henry Losey's wife was Mary Burleigh.
REITZEL
Sophia REITZEL, who married Dennis VanDeman4 Lincoln, was born in
Orangeville, NY according to their marriage record. The census of 1870
shows her listed with her father, Adam Reitzel at age 8 years. In the 1880
MI census she is listed as a niece of Frank Abbey or niece of his wife,
living with them 4 houses down the Bennett Road from where Van lived with
his father, Dennis, in Jackson Co. They were married that year and Sophia
died with the measles after Frank was born.
We found Adam, her father, living in Wyoming Co. near Truman Abbey who
possibly was a relative of hers. A tombstone in Dutch Flats Cemetery in
Wyoming Co. shows a Henry Reitzel, believed to be her grandfather, and his
