Underwood Wrestling The Old Shoe Award The Old Shoe Award is the highest honor a senior wrestler at Underwood can receive. It is awarded to the wrestler who displays the greatest determination, sportsmanship, and work ethic in the sport of wrestling. Established in 1988, the Old Shoe Award was first given to Bruce Obrecht by Head Coach Steve McWilliams. The award was actually established because of Bruce’s efforts that so impressed Coach McWilliams, he felt compelled to create an award to honor not only his current wrestler but all Underwood wrestlers in the future. It was Coach McWilliams’s opinion that wrestlers work harder and make greater sacrifices than any other athletes and an award to honor that should be established. The shoe that Bruce wore during his senior season was bronzed and placed on the apex of this impressive award.
