Human Body WYNN Lesson Plan Subject Areas: Science, Language Arts Title: Human Body Lesson 1: Spelling Practice Lesson 2: Science Vocabulary Development Lesson 3: Web Research for the Human Body Lesson 4: Writing a Report on a Human Body Organ Skills: 1. Spelling 2. Vocabulary development 3. Research techniques 4. Written composition Description: Through a series of four lessons using WYYN 5.1, students will learn to successfully spell science vocabulary words associated with the human body, understand the meanings of the same vocabulary words, and demonstrate their knowledge using them correctly in a sentence. Students will choose one organ to research on the Web and then use the information gathered to complete a report about the organ. The choice of vocabulary words and the length of the report are at the discretion of the teacher. Students will be given the option of using the Word Prediction and Outline features in the Yellow Writing Toolbar to aid in writing their paragraphs. Goals: 1. To spell science words associated with the human body. 2. To demonstrate the understanding of the definitions of science vocabulary related to the human body by using the words in sentences. 3. To gather information about a human body organ. 4. To write a report about an organ of the human body. Objectives: 1. To learn how to spell vocabulary words using WYNN’s Spell tool. 2. To gather information about an organ of the human body at http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/body/factfiles/organs_anatomy.s html using WYNN’s Web Toolbar. 4. To write a report about a particular organ from information gathered from the Web using WYNN’s Yellow Writing Toolbar. Procedure: Lesson 1: Spelling Practice 1. Students will open WYNN and open the document called Human Body Spelling Words. Words can be chosen by teacher based on grade level. 2. Students will click the Read button and listen to the list of vocabulary words. 3. Students will rotate to the Pink Study Skills Toolbar. 4. Students, in the Write mode, will place the cursor next to the first word. 5. Students will click the Spell button and listen to the spelling of the word. Repeat. 6. Students will continue to use the Spell button for each vocabulary word. 7. Students will rotate to Blue File Management Toolbar and click Save As and give the document a new name. 8. Students may work in pairs to test each other’s spelling of the vocabulary words; one using WYNN to check the other’s oral spelling. Lesson 2: Science Vocabulary Development 1. Students will open WYNN and open the document called Human Body Vocabulary Words. 2. Students will rotate to the Pink Study Skills Toolbar. 3. Students, in Write mode, will place the cursor next to the first vocabulary word. 4. Students will click the Dictionary button, then Read button and listen to the definition(s). 5. Students will select (drag cursor across the text so that it is selected) the correct definition. 6. Students will click Copy Selected Text to Clipboard and click Close. 7. Students will click Text Note button and then the Paste button. Definition will appear in the window. 8. Students will click Close and will then see the Text Note icon in the Human Body Vocabulary Words document. 9. Students will repeat 1-8 to until all words have been defined. 10. Students, in Write mode, will place the cursor at the end of the first word and then type a sentence using that word. 11. Students will repeat step 10 until a sentence has been written for each word. 12. Students will rotate to Blue File Management Toolbar and click Save As and give the document a new name. Students may print out this document as a study guide to take home. Definitions will appear at the bottom of the printed page. Lesson 3: Web Research for the Human Body 1. Students will open WYNN and click on the Web button. 2. Students will enter www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/body/factfiles/organs_anatomy.shtml into the Address box. 3. Students will click the organ of their choice. 4. Students will use the Highlight feature to highlight the information they want to include in their report. 5. Students will click Extract and click Selected Text. 6. Students will click New WYNN Document. Selected text will appear in a new window. 7. Students may repeat the process of highlighting more text by returning to the Web site by clicking the name from the File List and clicking Use Selected Document to add information to the previous selected text. 8. Students will save document. Lesson 4: Writing a Report on a Human Body Organ 1. Students will open WYNN and their saved document from their Web research. 2. Students will click New. A blank page will open. 3. Students will rotate to the Yellow Writing Toolbar. 4. Students will reread their research. 5. Students will now begin to write their report. 6. Students may flip between the new document and their research information by clicking the desired document from the File List. 7. Students may write from memory or copy and paste from the information document into the report document. 8. Depending on ability levels or teacher discretion, students may use Word Prediction. 9. After completing the report, students will rotate to Blue File Management Toolbar and click Save As and give the document a new name.
