Spring, Summer, or Fall 2012 Practical Experience Scholarship Application Merit based scholarships available to students completing their practical (formerly referred to as “field”) experience requirement in the Spring, Summer, or Fall semesters. There will be a separate application in the fall for students seeking funding for a Winter 2013 practical experience. All applicants will be considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible. PitE practical experience scholarships can only be earned only once. Basic Eligibility for All Scholarship Applicants: Must be in good academic standing at the university and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, and Be either a declared concentrator or minor in the Program in the Environment, and Practical experience must be pre-approved by Kimberly Smith, and Must NOT have previously completed an approved practical experience, and Must agree to the terms of acceptance as stipulated in the award notice. APPLICATION DEADLINE: TUESDAY, MARCH 6, 2012 AT 5:00 PM DESCRIPTION OF SCHOLARSHIPS Abrams Endowed Scholarship Through the generosity of private donors James and Wendy Abrams, scholarships are available in perpetuity for PitE students completing their Field Experience. Any PitE student is eligible. Scholars will agree to meet with Mr. and Mrs. Abrams during their annual visit to campus. Barry G. Rabe Fund Scholarship This award recognizes the Program in the Environment’s first permanent director. It is endowed with donations from PitE alumni, faculty associates and staff. This award supports students completing an environmental policy internship or field program such as the Michigan in Washington semester. Eligibility: Participation in a field experience with an emphasis on environmental policy. Field Experience Support Endowment Anonymous donors established this endowment to assist PitE students with field experience expenses. Eligibility: Any PitE student is eligible for this scholarship. Environmental Experience Scholarship Fund Need-based scholarships established by an anonymous donor. Eligibility: Student demonstrates financial need as determined by the University’s Office of Financial Aid. Goldring Family Foundation Field/International Experience Award This is funded through an endowed gift from the Goldring Family Foundation. It goes toward expenses of an LSA student in Program in the Environment who completing his/her practical experience away from Ann Arbor. Eligibility: Completing field experience requirement away from the university. 1 Graham Field Experience Scholarship The Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute has provided significant funding to expand the range of field experience opportunities PitE students can afford to participate in. The awards are for students whose sitebased field experiences offer hands-on experience in environmental sustainability areas. This scholarship cannot be used toward equipment purchases. Eligibility: Practical Experience must relate to an environmental sustainability challenge or study. Student must demonstrate academic performance. Preference to students at Junior level or higher, though all students may apply. A 3-page report is due after the field experience is completed (see page 5 for report guidelines) Robert M. Owen Scholarship Fund This scholarship fund was established last year to recognize Robert Owen’s contributions to the university. Robert Owen was PitE’s third director and is a professor of geological sciences, who for many years, taught at Camp Davis, the university’s Rocky Mountain Field Station. This scholarship supports students taking a science course at Camp Davis. Eligibility: Must be completing a science course at Camp Davis. A completed budget (on page 4), showing anticipated expenses, sources of funding you currently have secured, and your unmet need. An unofficial transcript. A copy of your 1-page resume. A statement, if applicable, of financial need or other exceptional circumstances you would like us to consider. Please note only one of these awards is need-based. If applying for the need based scholarship, a copy of your financial aid package for the current 2011-2012 Aid Year. Please Note: Scholarship recipients will NOT have fulfilled their field experience requirement until PitE receives a copy of the thank you letter to the scholarship donor. For Graham Scholarship recipients, a copy of the final report is also required to meet the field experience requirement. Copies of the thank you letters (and report for Graham Scholarship recipients) should be submitted to Kimberly Smith in the PitE office within 4 weeks after the student has completed the activity for which he or she has received the scholarship. Also Note: Only one set of application materials needs to be provided, regardless of the number of scholarships for which you are applying. Students will be considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible, but will be awarded no more than one scholarship. The Graham Institute has semi-annual meetings of our external advisory board, and our major donor, Donald Graham, attends. The board in general, and Mr. Graham in particular enjoys meeting with students, and as such, we may ask some of you to attend a meeting and give a poster presentation to the board and Mr. Graham. We will cover the costs of poster production for those asked to give a presentation. 5
