BAKER STREET (handout for students)
There are five houses on Baker Street. One person lives in each house. The goal is to find out each
person’s name, whether he or she is married or not, what pet he or she owns, which books he or she
likes and what he or she likes to drink. The first one to fill in all the correct information wins.
(1) Read the clues on your slips of paper and fill in your chart with that information.
(2) Get the rest of the information by asking questions of the other students in your group. Do NOT
simply type the clues into the chat.
(3) Do not give away any information unless you are asked a question about it and no insider trading!
NOTE TO TEACHER: Depending on the time alloted and your philosophy on rules, you may want to
establish this last rule to avoid the following “I don’t know who lives in #14 but I know that so and so
lives in #18, now what will you tell me?” But then again, if it is all in the target language, you may not
mind. Swapping will happen anyway and it can be fun!
NOTE TO TEACHER: PROVIDING VOCAB
You may wish to list the items that belong to each category in the first column. SEE Marital
Status.

NOTES TO TEACHER:
Copy your target language clues from the worksheet above onto a page like this.
Cut into strips and distribute to students.
IF you are in a chat room with whispering capabilities, give one clue to each student. If there are more
than 20 students cut up two copies of the handout.
IF you are using small chat groups of 4-5 students, divide the 20 clues among the students. Color coding
groups is helpful for then you can quickly assign students with green strips to go to green chat room.
