He is best known for the huge paintings he made by splattering, throwing and dripping paint onto his canvas. To him, the important part of his art was how he did it. He liked to call his work Action Painting- He would tack his canvas to the floor and quickly walk around it while throwing, splattering and dripping his paint. He wanted people to see and feel the energy he used when he painted. His goal was to fill his paintings with movement, color and energy. Sometimes the paint created beautiful and colorful shapes, other times - there were no shapes at all. When a painting has no recognizable or natural objects in it, it is called Abstract. When abstract art represents a lot of emotions and feelings it is called Abstract Expressionism. Jackson died in a car accident in 1956. He was 44 years old. Today people still recognize his work and the original style he created. Possible Questions o How does this painting make you feel? o What makes you feel that way? Activity: Marble Madness *Note to Art Guide: Little Prep to this activity but CLEAN-UP is a bit of work washing & drying the trays so THANK YOU !! Place newspaper in area will you can dry the work when finished & all covering the desks. Each student will get a baking sheet/tray & 1 piece of paper. Have students write their name on the back, turn over & place in tray. Give students 3 marbles to practice rolling around in trays WITHOUT having them come out. They do this OVER their desks & siting down. Once they are ready you will add several colors of paint in the middle of their trays. Shake paint bottles well and add VERY LITTLE DOTS OF PAINT !!! ** If you squirt a glob of paint on the paper, the marble will get stuck & not be able to roll thru it. ** Students should not being using their fingers or hands in the paint, just simply tilting the tray to get the marble to roll thru the paint. Repeat process until they have used all the colors they. If they would like to revisit one of the colors, let them do so but as to not saturate the paper. Clean up classroom & trays, let art dry. Discuss with teacher if you would like to display, hold for portfolio, or send home.
