Steamboat Era
 1803: American Robert Fulton tests first steamboat design in France
 Advantages and results of steamboat use: Well suited for river travel
o Could move upriver without relying on wind power
o Increased trade & profitsGoods could be moved quickly & cheaply
o By 1850s: Steamboats being used to carry people & goods across the Atlantic
Gibbons v. Ogden
 Issue: Private control over waterways & Federal Govt. authority to regulate interstate trade
 Result: S Court decision reaffirmed federal control & ended monopolistic control over
waterways.
American Railroads
 Early 1800s: Developed in Great Britain 1830s:Trains become popular in US
 Peter Cooper and the Tom Thumb:He built small locomotive and raced against horse drawn rcar
 Result of Tom Thumb contest: TT lost, however railroad fever spread
 Challenges for railroad industry:
o Trains tracks ran up and down steep mountains
o Also around tight curves & over swift rivers
 Economic Results of Railroads:
o Economy surged forward
o Hauled more freight than other countries
o Became some of the most powerful businesses in the nation
 Impact on people:
o Farmers could send goods to distant markets
o Fastest form of transportation for people
o Passengers accept risks because of reduced travel time
Transportation Revolution Brings Changes (6 things) goods to distant markets, easier, less costly
now have a national economy, towns spring up, cities grow, surge in American pride
A New Fuel:1/2 ton of coal VS 2 tons of wood same energy but coal is cheaper
 Early Trans. Revolution: Increased use of certain natural resources, first was wood
 Later: Coal replaced wood
 Results: Locomotives became faster-demand for coal increased
 1870s: Demand for coal increased as demand for steel grew
 Results of growing steel industry: Helped fuel need for more railroads
 Other Causes and Effects: New factories built, steel farm tools and machines-new equipment
more crops.
