CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, POMONA ACADEMIC SENATE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS COMMITTEE REPORT TO THE ACADEMIC SENATE AP-009-034 Reorganization of Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Animal Science Academic Programs Committee Date: Executive Committee Received and Forwarded Date: 6/23/04 Academic Senate Date: 7/14/04 First Reading Waiver Requested AP-009-034, Reorganization of Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Animal Science 2 Background The Department of Animal and Veterinary Science proposes a restructuring of the curriculum of the B.S. in Animal Science into two new options: Pre-Vet /Graduate School Option, and Animal Industries/Business Management. The total units to degree will be reduced to 180 units under the new structure. Resources Consulted Debra Brum, Wayne Bidlack, Cedric Matsushima, Leo Abenes, Ed Fonda, and Les Young Discussion The Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences is proposing to reduce the number of options under the Animal Science major (1250) from three options (Pre-Vet/Graduate School, Animal Industries/Business Management, and Equine Science) to two options by downgrading the Equine Science option (1253) to a “track” under the Animal Industries/Business Management option (1252). The Pre Vet/Graduate School option remains unchanged. The College of Agriculture is also proposing the creation of two tracks within the second major (Veterinary Sciences major-1260) offered by the department. As part of these proposals the number of units required to graduate in all re-organized majors, options and tracks is to be reduced to 180 units. A summary of these changes is shown below. 1. Restructure the curricula of the AVS Department's 2 majors with the following emphases and tracks: Animal and Veterinary Science Major - reduce number of options to two. 1. Pre-Vet/ Graduate School option 2. Animal Industries/Business Management option Equine Industries Track Science Emphasis Business Emphasis Animal Agribusiness Track Animal Health Sciences Major - offer two tracks under the major Science Track Business Track 2. All consultations were done Several of the courses listed as ‘new’ are in fact reformatted and realigned existing core courses in the majors and options. The department is doing this by deleting the courses listed in 4 above and replacing them with those listed in 3 above. A new course Veterinary Economics and Hospital Management for the Veterinary Sciences major is being proposed. The proposed changes are the result of two intensive peer reviews of the Department. One review was at the Department level and the other review was AP-009-034, Reorganization of Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Animal Science 4 at the college level These reviews took place during the 2002-2003 academic year. The proposed changes reflect the need to consolidate similar programs and manage scarce resources while maintaining a quality program. The resources supplied relevant information on several of the program changes or deletions. 1. Deleted -- Equine Science Option: Enrollment in this option has declined and most of the students are in a business track that mirrors the Animal Industries/Business Management Option. The course of study within the Equine Science option exist in the other options so students currently enrolled in the Equine Science option will be able to complete their option. Notably there are no new requirements due to folding the Equine Science option within the Animal Industries/Business management option. 2. Reorganized -- Animal Industries/Business Management Option: This option offers a less scientific preparation for students who are interested in animals-but not a scientific career. As the alternative option to the Pre-Vet/Graduate School option this option gives students the opportunity to develop business skills that will help them compete for jobs in businesses that involves animals. This option may prepare students for potential graduate study in a MBA program. Addition of the Equine option into this option is logical and would not affect students. Consultation with recommended resources provided full support for the reorganization of inclusion of such courses in the new FMAM options. The course changes are appropriate and would not impair any current continuing student from timely graduation. The new program sheets for all proposed majors and options are attached. Recommendations 1. The Academic Programs Committee recommends the acceptance of the deletion of the Equine Sciences option and reorganization of the program within the Animal Industries/Business Management Option. 2. The Academic Programs Committee concurs with requested curricular changes as outlined and recommends their acceptance. Note the University Curriculum Committee has approved these changes.
