GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA [ OP. RAJASTHAN (WR)]
During the FS 2004-2005, 24 items including 4 of STIM, 2 on National Geo-chemical
mapping (NGM), 15 on mineral investigation, 1 for search for rare metal and 2 geoenvironmental appraisal items were taken up. During the period under review a total of
876sq.km.of STM, 2180 sq.km.of NGM, 26.1sq.km. LSM, 3.295sq.km.detailed
mapping, 80sq.km. of reconnaissance. mapping and 7548.89 in. of drilling was carried
out. A brief account of the highlights of the work done is given below:
(i) Specialized Thematic mapping (STM) Project:
Three new items of STM were taken up while one was in continuation of the last
F.S. All the items fulfilled their respective thematic objectives.
The STM work in Sandmata Complex (Nasirabad-Masuda sector, 45 K/5): STM
1:25,000 scale which was continued from FS 2003-04 has revealed the existence of high
grade inetasediments of the Bhilwara Supergroup (BSG) forming the county rock. High
grade metasediments of the BSG are intruded by porphyritic (gneissic) granite and
gabbroid/noritic rocks, amphibolite, quartz-feldspathic (aplitic to pegmatoid) and quartz
veins. A part from this, a narrow linear discontinuous patch for cyclic volcanosedimentary sequence is seen around Kelu village and also a sedimentary sequence from
Hanotiya to Akarsada within the BSG. Around Hanotiya, old workings and slag
materials are seen, supposed to be indicator of mining in the past where copper deposit
has been established by AMSE Wing, Jaipur in the seventies, but for a limited strike
length (400 in. x 10-20 in.). Evidence of surfacial mineralisation is recorded in dump
material along old workings in the form of malachite staining over gritty to pebbly
quartz arenite of the sedimentary sequence. Near to it around dhanikhera, mineralisation
of chalcopyrite is seen in dug well dumps as segregations along fractures/shears.
The STM of Delhi Supergroup in Nim Ka Thana-Raipur-Patan area Sikar district (parts
of toposheets No. 45 M/I3, 14 and 54 A/1, 2) has revealed the incidences of very good
copper mineralisation as grains of bornite and malachite stains in the Baleshwar-DokanPatan area. Bornite grains are exposed at the surface as veins and disseminations in
calcareous-biotite-schist/impure marble rock. Grains of chalcopyrite, covellite and pyrite
as disseminations with malachite stains are also noted int he area as in NNE of Nimod,
north of Baleshwar, north of Kalyanpura. in Mahawa area very good malachite stains are
noted with specks of bornite in Ajabgarh. quartzite and schists. Pyrrhotite type, whitish
yellow coloured sulphide is noted in Alwar massive quartzite at one place north of
Bhopiya on the ridge top Gossan of deep red to reddish brown colour is noted in the area
north of Baleshwar, exposed for a length of nearly 100 m. and width varying from 20 m.
to 30 m. Old working is noted at the contact of Alwar quartzite and Ajabgarh schist, on
the eastern slope of Alwar quartzite ridge, SE of Baleshwar. Old working is also noted at
the contact of Alwar ferruginous brecciated quartzite and Ajabgarh schists SW of
Kalyanpura with good malachite stains. Ferruginous brecciated quartzite in
Parusotampura-Kalyanpura section is gossanised at many places. One prominent iron
rich rock unit is noted nearly 4 km. SSW of Raipur, which is 10-25 m. wide and seems
like magnetite body where as at other places it is amphibole-schist rock, rich in iron.
An area of 260 sq.km was mapped on1:25,000 scale under the project specialised
thematic mapping in parts of topsheet No. 45 H/9 between Lat. 24°45' & 24°55' and
Long. 73°30' & 73º45'. The study area covers an area of entire length of Aravalli Fold
Belt including sections of the BGC (basement) in the east and Delhi fold belt in west.
Malachite stains were recorded in a zone (250 m. x 10 m.) along the BGC-ASG contact
near Zhala Estate south of Kesuli. Ferruginised/gossanised zone is recorded along the
contact. The STM carried out in between Toda-Raisingh and Rajmahal areas in parts of
the T.S. No. 45 N/8 & 12,45 0/5 & 9 within latitude 25°53' - 26°04' and longitude 75°20'
-, 75°35' is composed mainly of 'pelitic metasediments (migmatised to various degress),
substantial arenaceous metasediments and minor carbonate sediments. The rocks of the
area mapped belong to the Kekri and Rajmahal formations of the Mangalwar complex
(GSl meinoir-123). The Kekri formation comprises of garnetiferous biotite schist
(veined gneiss), banded gneiss (stromatic), biotite gneiss (streaky), thin bands of
calcsilicate rocks and biotite schist interbanded with calc-silicate, amphibolite and grey
quartzite. These above gneisses (miginatites) are the effect. of various degrees of
miginatitsation. The Rajmahal Formation comprises micaceous quartzite (feldspathic at
places pebbly), coarse-grained quartzite (gritty in nature), massive quartzite and
ferruginous quartzite and thin band of conglomerate (seen at one place in between
micaceous quartzite and massive quartzite-W of Rampura). The field relation of the
migmatised metasedilments of the Kekri formation and the arenaceous metasedments of
the Rajmahal Formation are at many places lithologically gradational. Numerous
tectonic signatures are also noticed near the contact of Kekri and Rajmahal formations.
Occurrences of semiprecious minerals like beryl, garnet have been noticed in the area.
The transparent variety 0 light green colour of beryl is mined near Rampura, Bagri,
exclusively from the pegmatite vein. The pegmatite vein also contains topaz
(transparent), quartz, feldspar, tourmaline (black). The semiprecious variety of garnet is
mined near Rajmahal from garnetiferous biotite schist where the intrusion of at
amphibolite has taken place, giving rise to big size of the garnet crystals (8 cm. dia). The
garnet is highly fractured. About 20 open shallow pits are seen for mining of beryl
where as 3-4 abandoned garnet mines (30 m.-40 m. deep) are seen. Besides, at a number
of places malachite stains and chalcopyrite have also been seen. Ferruginous zones (3 m.
wide and 40 m. long, at two places) near Bisalpur along the shear zone are noticed in
quartzite of the. Rajamahal formation.
.
(ii) Geo-chemical Mapping:
Geochemical mapping in T.S. No. 54 A/5 & 6 has revealed that nearly 60% of the area
is covered by alluvium, and in the remaining area rocks belonging to the Alwar Group
and Ajabgarh Group of Delhi Supergroup are exposed. The intrusives in the area include
granite and basic rocks. Old workings are found in Baraud (T.S. No. 54 A/5 & 6) and in
.Rampur area (T.S. No. 54 A/5 & 6). Granites are exposed near Harsora. It comprises
two varieties of granite, grey and pink. The pink variety appears to be younger. Both
varieties give mild detection of radioactivity on the scintillometer. The grey variety
shows less than 0.03 m. R/hr while the pink variety shows upto 0.06 m. R/hr total count.
The fresh surface of the pink variety shows the maximum value.
GCM in TS K/4 & K/7 has revealed that most of the area exposes the banded gneissic
complex with limited metasedimentary patches. The exposure density is low and
generally deposits low relief. Most of the sampling has been done from "0" order
Streams.
(iii) Mineral Investigation:
The basemetal investigations in El category included two drilling programme for leadzinc mineralisation in Dariba-Bethumbi Surawas belt, one in Bhupal Sagar belt, one in
Dokan-Kundla Ki Dhani block, one in Central Khetri belt and two in south Khetri belt.

chert breccia) at depth. The borehole commenced on 27.9.2004 and has progressed upto
456.40 m. It has intersected carbonaceous mica schist, ferruginous chert, dolomitic
marble and calc silicate marble. Specks & dissimiations of pyrite are present.
I
Geochemical survey was taken up in Gadariyawas- Laugach area in the Hindoli Group
of rocks with the aim to delineate potential mineralised zones of basemtals. A 10 m. to
100 m. wide ferruginous chert breccia zone showing enrichment in basemetals is
demarcated on 1:10,000 scale for 5 km. strike length within quartz-chlorite-schist and
quartz-sericite schist horizon. This zone trends in N 40° E-S40° W direction for the
major part and takes in N-S swing in the southern part near Nimbahera. A one thin
(10m. wide) ferruginous marble band has also noticed interinittently100-150 m. west of
the above-mineralised zone. Soil sampling on 100 m x 250 m. grid and spot bed rock
sampling of the potential mineralised zone have been carried out. Analytical results of
15 spot bedrock samples collected from the entire mapped area indicate high (upto
0.12%) Cu and Zn along with moderate (0.06%) amount of Pb and Ni. An area of 10.00
sq.km. area was mapped on 1: 10,000 scale in the above potential zone.

from 523.40 m. to 533.40 m. =.10.00 m. with 2-3% Zn (VE). The borehole is in
progress. The progress in drilling was extremely slow due to cherty quartzite.
In Dokan block, the entire four borehole (3 completed one in progress) intersected
calcareous-quartz biotite schist, siliceous ca1c-silicate marble, banded dolomite and
quartz.-chlorite-tremolite-biotite schist with or without garnet. Poor disseminations of
pyrite appear to be a universal phenomenon as it occurs in all the boreholes irrespective
of lithology. However significant zones of Cu mineralisation in forms of bornite,
chalcocite, covlite and chalcopyrite intersected in the boreholes, range in borehole width
of 9.00 m. to 40 .00m. with 0.1 % to 1 % Cu (visual estimate).
In Kundla Ki Dhani block, between the depth of 190.30 m. to 322.50 m., disseminations

in the ferruginised; gossanised part of the sheared micaceous quartzite. The general
trend of the formation is N 20° to 30° E with sub-vertical dips. Four sets of S planes
were observed. The gossan zone, east of Raisar, is developed at the contact between
metabasic flows of Tehla formation and quartzite of Pratapgarh formation of Alwar
Group. The length of the gossan is about 1500 m. with average width 30-40. m. The
lithology of Matasula block comprises Ajabgarh and Alwar Groups. of rocks, the
contact between the two is sheared and faulted which is evidenced by the presence of
fault breccia/brecciated quartzite. The work is in progress.
In Adwana Jahaz block the borehole AJ-2 was drilled from 93.55 in. to 302.65 in. and
was closed at 302.65 m. It has intersected lean Cu mineraIisation below the gossan zone

a number of localities. At about 12 km. NE of Salumber and 1 km. south of Ghagri
village the rock types exposed include felsic volcanics, dolomites and metabasic rocks
belonging to Delwara Formation of Debari Group of Aravalli Supergroup. An arcuate
700 m. long linear zone of old workings pits and adits is located in impure dolomites in
the central part of the block. Systematic geochemical surveys in the block have indicated
copper values upto 4000 ppm in bed rock and upto 7100 ppm in soil samples.
Test drilling in the block carried out during F.S. 2001-02 was continued as spill over
work during 2002-03. A total of three boreholes, RGH-l, 2 & 3 were drilled involving a
total 497.65 m. Boreholes RGH-2 & 3 intersected the following sopper zones:
RGH-2 Zone-I 98.85-100.10 = 1.25 In. x 0.26% Cu
Zone-II
102.00-109.90 = 7.90 m. x 0.35% Cu
Zone-III
121.00-130.35 =-9.35 m. x 0.32% Cu
RGH-2 Zone-I 98.25-102.30 = 4.05 111. X 0.83% Cu
Zone-II
104.75-106.45 = 1.70 m. x 0.53% Cu
Ground geophysical surveys carried out in the block during field season 2002-03 have
indicated encouraging IP and SP response over old workings zone.
In view of the above boreholes, RGH-2 & 3 (as above) and subsequent boreholes RGH4, 5, 6 & 7 have established the strike length of the mineralised zone for over 700 m.
corroborating with linear arcuate zone of old working in the area. The assessment of ore
potential of the block is under progress.

3. COAL WING (GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA, (KOLKATA)
A.Work Done in Rajasthn during the year 2004-05 (April, 2004 to March, 2005) :
Search for lignite by scout drilling in Nagrasar area, Palana Basin, Bikaner and laisalmer
districts, Rajasthan.
Item Code No. MIE/CW/2003/015 :
The Nagrasar area is located in the southwestern part of Palana Basin where lower
Tertiary sediments (Palaeocene-Lower Eocene) occur over the uneven basement of
Nagaur Group of rocks (Early Cambrin to Proterozoic). Department of Mines &
Geology, Rajasthan (DMGR) has already proved the occurrences of lignite in Raneri
and Heera Ki Dhani, east of Nagrasar area within the Tertiary sediments.
The exploration programme of scout drilling in Nagrasar area is being continued in the
field season 2004-05 with the objective to locate the lignite bearing areas and decipher
the stratigraphic set up and basin configuration, in the virgin southwestern part of Palana
Basin. A total of 1297.35 m. has been drilled. The sub-surface data generated so far
indicate deepening of basin in western part of Palana Basin, with over 250 m. thick
Tertiary sediments. A thick zone 2.50 In. of grayish black carbonaceous clay with lignite
stringers have been encountered in boreholes drilled near Devra-Ki-Dhani and Kolasar
within depth range of 101.75 m. to 158.70 m. Lignite (0.40 m. thick) has been
intersected south of Borana village at shallow depth. This is first indication of lignite
occurrence in the southwestern part of Palana Basin.
The investigation will be concluded by end of Septelnber, 2005.
B. Investigation proposed by Coal Wing, Geological Survey of India during the F
.S. 2005-06 :
(i) Title:
Search for lignite by scout in Borana east block, Bikaner & jaisalmer
districts, Rajasthan.
(ii) Objective: To locate and delineate the lignite bearing blocks and establish the strati
graphic set up of the southwestern part of Palana Basin.
Two drills are proposed to be deployed in Borana east block with envisaged drilling of
2200 m. for a period of one year.
4. M/s HINDUSTAN ZINC LIMITED, UDAIPUR:
A. Hindustan Zinc Limited Annual Progress of Exploration (April 2004March"2OO5):
1.Kayar ML
Assay results of 112 soil samples collected during the previous year show zinc values
ranging from 80 to 150ppm Zn. A total of 7.50 line Km. of line domain EM survey was
conducted to locate extension of known mineralisation further east in the hanging wall.
As the results were found encouraging in harmony with the litho-structural
interpretation, five deep holes involving 2595111 of diamond drilling was carried out to
test the depth continuity of main mineralisation. All the holes have intersected
mineralisation (> 10% Pb+Zn) over varying widths of 2 to I5m. The results are under
evaluation and further drilling work is planned to outline additional potential.
2.Agucha Extensions
In South extension, soil geo-chemical sampling (127 Nos.) and Time domain ElectroMagnetic survey (22.6 line km) was undertaken to locate promising areas. A total of
4502m of non-core and 11771n of core drilling were carried out in the old working area
south of mine.
Drilling results indicate presence of minor pyrite-pyrrotite with varying amount of
graphite (traces to 5%). Elevated lead values upto 0.60% were recorded in drill chip
samples at few places in some percussion holes. On the other hand, anmalous lead and
zinc values were also recorded in some drill cores. DD hole (SRA-1) intersected 2 zones
with elevated zinc grades: 13m with 0.27% and 4m with -1.0%. The other hole (SRA-3)
encountered 1 m length containing 0.13% lead and 0.66% Zinc.
Further work involving IP survey and drilling is in progress.
In North extension, further EM survey (9.45 line Km.) and soil sampling (258 samples)
was carried out. The assay results show erratic dispersion of zinc content in the soil.
Isolated highs (550 - 5400ppm Zn) are noted at places. A total of 626m of non core and
433m of core drilling was carried out during this year to test these isolated anomalous
zones but no encouraging values were obtained.
3.
Ajmer RP (RP-l/2001)
The assay results of 700 soil samples were not found encouraging. However, the
reconnaissance litho structural mapping and integration with airborne survey data
indicates potential in North extension of Kayar. Accordingly, an area of 24.08 sq.km.
near village Kayar Chachiawas and Makarawali was identified and prospecting license
applied. The remaining area of RP was relinquished.
Expenditure (provisional) : During the year 7.4 Lac. Cumulative - Rs. 21.5 Lac.
4 Gluabpura RP (RP-2/2001)
Regional geological mapping (-550 sq. km. area) was carried out in central and southern
part of RP. Most of the mapped area comprises of granite genesis with subordinate
amount of amphibolite, biotite schist, pasmmo-pelite rocks and pegmatite. Locally calc
silicate/dolomite is also mapped but no mineralisation signatures were noted except for
stray occurrences of Malachite at the contact of granitic gneiss with amphiobolite /
dolerite in Sathana area.
The geological data was evaluated in the light of airborne EM and magnetic data of
HZL-BHPM survey and four promising targets were selected for further follow up
through soil geochemical survey. A total of 248 samples were collected. The assay
results indicate no anomalous dispersion of zinc and lead in the soil.
Further interpretation through assimilation and evaluation of available data is in
progress.
Expenditure (provisional) during the year – Rs. 12.507 Lac. Cumulative – Rs. 16.907
Lac.
5 Re-processing of Airborne Geophysical Data

6. M/s RAJASTHAN STATE MINES AND MINERALS LIMITED:
RSMML was not engaged in any exploration work during the period April 2004 –
March 2005. However, the Mineral wise details of the deposits along with the
production during financial year 2004-2005 are given below:
Rock Phosphate Project:
The Jhamarkotra Phosphate Deposit has unique geological antiquity. It represent one of
the oldest sedimentary phosphate in the world formed primarily due to the metabolical
activities of the primitive plant organisms called "Blue Green Algae" in shallow parts of
Aravallian Epicontental sea dated 2000 million years ago. Un-disputable geological
evidences exist for corroborating the above theory on the origin of Jhamarkotra
phosphate deposit. The blue green algaes through the process of diagenesis had got
converted into sedimentary structure called "Stromatolites" which control the grade
distribution pattern of the entire deposit.
The deposit, shows a Bi-modal grade distributions pattern viz +30% P2O5 designated as
HGO (High Grade Ore) and 16 to 22% P2O5 designated as LGO (Low Grade Ore)
could be deciphered. (The study of physical characteristics of the phosphate bed also
corroborate the above analysis). However, at places near the contacts of the above
grades of phosphate bed, some transitional zones exist which are designated as MGO
(Mixed/Medium Grade)
The production of Rock Phosphate during the financial year 2004-2005 is as shown
below:

2 Lignite Projects at Giral & Kasnau – Matasukh
Lignite is being exploited from Giral and Kasnau – Matasukh deposits. Due to the
interference of ground water in the pits, mining has been temporarily suspended in the
kasnau – Matasukh project. Drilling of Tube Wells for De – watering are in progress and
mining of Lignite is likely to be commenced very shortly.
Brief Geology of the Giral Deposit
The rock units in the area are represented by sedimentary assemblages from the
Cretaceous to the Recent age. A major part of the area is covered by aeolian sand.
Lignite horizons
Three broadly co-relatable, though discontinuous lignite horizones designated as Top,
Middle and Bottom have been identified. Structural disturbances in the form of five F1
to F5 have been interpreted from borehole data.
The production of Lignite from Giral Mines during 2004-2005 was 5.48 Lakh tonnes.

B Geological studies carried out during 2004-2005:
Special Integrated Study (SIS) of Feldspar/Quartz/Soapstone mines of Rajasthan.
During the year 2004-05, 41 Feldspar/Quartz/Soapstone mines in Rajasthan were
covered under geological study. The outcomes of the study are enumerated below:
1. Outcome of the SIS Feldspar/Quartz/Soapstone mines of Rajasthan:
Special study of mines with particular reference to promote and monitor community
development in mining areas has been carried out in Bhiwlara and Bikaner districts by
this region during the year 2004-05. The special studies are area specific with a
multimineral approach which conceptually covers all mining geological aspects in
cluster of mining activity in these districts focusing on the problems and approaches for
likely solutions in the field of mineral conservation, scientific mining and protection of
environment. Total 41 mines of soapstone, clay, quartz/feldspar & mica have been
covered under this study. The special study of Ajmer Regional office covered 27 lease
holds in Bhilwara district comprising of soapstone, clay, pyrophylite, quartz and
feldspar mines and 14 lease holds of clay in Bikaner district. The conclusions and
recommendations arrived out of this study are as follows :
(A) Geology and Exploration:
1 The soapstone deposits of Bhilwara are associated with dolomite and quartzite of
Jahazpur Group of rocks. The occurrence of talc and soapstone bodies are reported in
the core of tight folds and the proximity of dolomite suggest that talc has been formed
by alteration of dolomite along major shear zone. The general strike of the soapstone is
in a NNE-SSW to NEW direction. The clays of Bhilwara have two type of origin,
namely, sedimentary type of fluviatile origin and the other type of deposit is of alteration
of phylite and schist of Jahazpur Group. The quartz and feldspar mines are restricted to
the pegmatite venis intruded into the granite gneiss of Sandmata Complex of Archaean
age. In Bikaner, there are three main beds of clays interveded by sandstone and siltstone.
It is sedimentary in nature.
2 As regards gaps in exploration, scientific and detailed exploration has not been carried
out so far particularly for soapstone, clay deposits in the area covered under study in
Bhilwara district by State carried out by these leases. This may either due to intermittent
working or temporarily closed for long period either due to poor grade or/ and
noncompliance of statute like consent for permission under water and air act, MOEF
clearance. In mechanised mines Ghewaria and chainpura, there is backlog of 1565 m. in
17 boreholes as target as proposed minerlisation so as to evolved ultimate pit limites.
Further, study reveals that the long stretches of host rock, viz, dolomitic limestone has
not been explored fully in Chainpura, Chewaria, Abhaypura and Bhagwasa blocks to
find out minerlisation loci's. However, pitting and trenching has been carried in
dolomitic limestone at shallow depth of 3-5 m., but is not adepuate to explore the
deposit in vergin areas.
3 The graps in exploration has resulted in section of dumping ground, ultimate pit limit
and mineable depth as these areas are happens situated in the forest area, interspersed
with private agricultural land and in the vicinity of Banas River. For immediate follow
up of Backlog & gaps in exploration, suggestion letter and violation letters has been
sought to the concerned lessee.
4 In case of clay deposit of Kolayat area, the exploration inputs have been reached to
satisfactory level as per proposal made in mining plans and schemes by pursuit of
suggestions made in previous studies carried out by IBM, in view to caters need of
reclamations of mined out areas & augmentation of production as per market demand.
This activity is need to be accelerated in other mine out areas in through modification in
mining plan proposals on the basis exploration out puts.
5 In case of quartz & feldspar mines, there is hardly need of explorations as the ample
potential of mineral vested in pegmatite bodies stands as hummocks. exhibiting
topographical control. The exploration practices are mostly confined to know the quality
of feldspar and quartz.
6 The major problems in systematic exploration and development are mostly
acquirement of land for exploration in forest and private lands. The clearance requires
longer time, which in turn affects the scheduling exploration programme. In most of clay
leases of Kolayat area, reserves are sustains to longer gestation period owing the scale
production. Besides, cost of exploration perhaps the main bottlenecks in case of small of
clay, quartz and feldspar.
7 The recoverable reserves of soapstone, clay, quartz and feldspar in the mines covered
under the study are 12, 21.5 and 4.8 million tonnes, respectively. The reserves are
upgraded from time to time of approval mining schemes.
(B) Overall Mining Scenario :
8 mining is mostly manual except three soapstone mine which are in operation by
mechanized method. Mining of soapstone and clay mostly systematic with proper
development of benches & separate benches for overburden and mineral. Approach
roads are available upto pit bottom in most of the mines. Mining of quartz, and feldspar
is rather unsystematic mainly due to the nature of pegmatite body which occur as veins
and require huge investment for systematic development.
9 All the mines except three mechanized mines of M/s UMDS inspected are grouped as
"B" manual. However, it is observed the most clay mine owners resort to the use of
hired Heavy Earth Moving Machineries like excavartors and JCB's with tipper/dumper
combination for removal of overburden waste
and interburden.
10 Major production of soapstone is form the two mechanised mines of M/s UMDS,
which have shown a constant increase in production over the last five year. The
production of soapstone from other mines is negligible and very inconsistent. The
production of clay has more or less remained stagnant at about.
11 Average cost of production of clay is about Rs. 80-100 per tonne. The average cost of
production of soapstone is Rs. 130-550 per tonne. Cost of production of feldspar and
quartz is around Rs. 150 to 175 per tonne.
12 None of mines inspected have proper laboratory facility to analyze the minerals for
which they are dependent on out agencies like Central Glass and Ceramic Institute and
other small laboratories. The results provided by the small laboratories are often
erroneous and not reliable.
13 The mining lease of clay in Kolayat belt have been granted by State Government by
many names such as white clay, china clay, ball clay, fire clay etc. Moreover, in some
cases the same lease has been granted by two or more names such as china/ball clay
whereas the mineral remains same. Further more, white clay is a non-technical term.
Assigning different terminologies has led to generation of an-erroneous picture
regarding mineral inventory of the country as a whole. These clays are Kaolinite with
high plasticity inventory of the country as a whole. Therefore, it will be in fitness of
things that state Government gives a proper terminology as ball clay for clays occuring
in Bikaner district. The above observation was made during earlier studies in 2001-02
and 02-03.
14 In the soapstone mines of Bhilwara area dolomite and quartzite occur as side
burden, which is excavated along with the soapstone. Presently this dolomite is being
dumped along with other waste due as this is not included as a mineral in the mining
lease. Two dolomite samples were collected and anlysed in the RODL Ajmer and it is
found that there is scope of utilizing this dolomite as a filler or as a flux in the steel
industries. Similarly in the clay mines of Mudh block in Bikaner, fullers earth is existing
as overburden and is being dumped along with other waste material. The fullers earth is
a minor mineral and are not included as mineral to be extracted and exploited and
sometimes allotted to another party. This results in interference in the workings. It will
be fitness of things that fullers earth should be granted to the owner of the clay mineral
so that proper utilisation of fullers earth could be made.
(C) Environmental issues :
1 Land degradation due to mining is minimal considering the total land under lease. As a
percentage, only 13% of land has been degraded due to various mining activities like
pitting, dumping, site services and other miscellaneous uses. Rest of the land is lying as
it is. Land use as percentage of total land held under lease is given below:

1 Of the 158 hectares of land degraded by pits 6.30 hectares area has already been
reclaimed.
2 Reclamation of the worked out pits in which mineral has been exhausted has been
commenced in the Kolayat clay belt. This has been possible due to continuous effort
made by the officers of Indian Bureau of Mines to persuade the mine owners for
exploring the pit bottom and start back filling of the worked out pits if no mineral is
found. As no date, of the 14 mines inspected 11 mines have started reclamation of the
pits by back filling and 6.3 hectres have been reclaimed by back filling in Bikaner clay
belt. This was almost negligible when these mines were inspected in the year 2001-02.
3 In the context of reclamation of mine out areas in Bhilwara, it necessary to study geohydrogical aspects since majority of mines are situated in Water Shade Region of Banas
River before reclamation proposals so as utilisation of mined out pits should be come
out as a meaningful opportunity.
4 Exploration in mechanised mines is far lagging behind as stipulated in mining plans;
regular follow up will be required through the provisions made under MCD rules. This
is important in view of dumping management of waste material generated in ensuing
sheme periods.
5 There is a need of study by state Government agencies in region to know the extent of
the day deposits of fluviatile sedimentary deposits of Recent to sub-Recent age occuring
in the vicinity of flood plains of Banas river by recognizing the buried paleo-troughs or
isolated basin. There is hardly knowledge to lessee to differentiate two types of
occurrences.
6 It should made mandatory on the part of lessee to draw the annual programme of
community development and should be proposed in approved mining plan interalia
NGO or as assistance to Government agencies/local civic bodies with priority areas in
regard to IRDP & Village Development Programmes in vicinity of mining areas viz.
shelters, hygiene, sanitation, education, water shade development by rainwater
harvesting and well recharge, social forestry, water stations and fodder camps,
organizing medical & polio vaccination camps.
7 The importance role of mining industry in socio-economic upliftment and its
contribution in environmental aspects is necessary to be brought out to the knowledge
of other cross sections society in the region. Therefore, the proper reporting system
should be evolved yearly basis for community development so as enable to know extent
and sustainable limits of area specific. It is felt necessary that the mines owners should
come forward voluntarily in co-operative manner, present the audio-visual clippings of
their viable outputs due to mining in the regions on various dais.
