AP on-line==legislative language to receive the basic funding to allow basic package to continue.
Don’t know what that means for next year. The budget is now year to year (at this time).
# of student that participated in AP classes 7% increase Statewide
Hispanic up 18.7%
African up 27.2%
Majority of money goes to purchase the student seats, to the mentors (200 a semester), grant for
teachers to take the institute to train them to teach the classes.
Budget
0% allowable growth so the money for tag remains the same 73.00 a student.
RTIHow does intervention for Gifted students work into this?? Right now it doesn’t. Still working on having
G/T on the RTI at the State Level.
Chapter 59 & Chapter 98
59: 59.5(4) Personalized education plan: BEST practice dictates that the services provide for each
student placed in a Gifted program be contained in a written, personalized gifted and talented plan.
It is ENCOURAGED to use these to document the goals of the program and record the outcomes.
Categorical funding:
98.20(1) Appropriate uses:
 Salary and benefits for the teacher of the gifted. If the teacher is part-time gifted and talented
and a part-time regular classroom teacher, then the portion that is related to providing the
gifted and talented program can be charged to the program but the regular classroom portion
could not.
 Staff development for the gifted and talented teacher
 Resources , materials, software, supplies (must meet criteria)
The first pool of money must be used from the general fund. Extracurricular activities outside
of the school day is one of choice, this cannot be funded by the GT money (even if all the
members are identified GT).
Des Moines School district was cited as OUT of Compliance for misappropriation of tag funds and
this district will now have to put back out!
Drake update:
Research on Play completed. Study is under review right now. Quick wit, problems solving, brain teasers
is play for GT kids. The kids want to play. If you were one of the schools that allowed your GT kids to
complete the on-line survey. THANK YOU!
Drake book study on work environment: The Way We are Working Isn’t Working.
ITAG conferences college credit is trying to be online. With the new federal guidelines to increase rigid
in College classes, the new requirements have increased seat time and work time at 15 hours each for
one credit.
The Creativity class taught was a huge success again this past summer. Capped at 20 participants. Sally
Beisser will have it again next summer. This is for teachers and developing creativity in students.

Don’t have to be gifted, just passionate about learning.
Younger kids 2-4 grade are the most popular classes
The district plans the class around the summer rec program so it is not competing again softball/soccer.
The week right after school is out. 2 hours a day.
(kitchen chemistry, poetry, are two examples)
College for kids program is in place at AEA 10. Little enrichment classes for gifted or motivated
students. AEA 10 Cedar Rapids- Susan Green is in charge.
*Are there teachers in NWAEA interested in teaching a one week 2 hr summer program for gifted or
highly motivated students?

Fall 2011 classes are out and tentative Spring classes are available on-line.
Explore test: if you do local testing at a school site each test will cost only 29.00
It was reported this would be good for teachers who have a group they are thinking about accelerating.
This will get a report like ITBS with deeper detail.
New program: Ideal Solutions: for math acceleration; put in math scores from various tests and this will
help you make decisions about acceleration in math.
