AB: Phase singularities are a ubiquitous feature of waves of all forms and represent a
fundamental aspect of wave topology. An optical vortex phase singularity occurs when there is a
spiral phase ramp about a point phase singularity. We report an experimental observation of an
optical vortex in a field consisting of 9-keV x-ray photons. The vortex is created with an x-ray
optical structure that imparts a spiral phase distribution to the incident wave field and is observed
by use of diffraction about a wire to create a division-of-wave-front interferometer.

AB: We report what is believed to be the first experimental observation of spontaneous
nucleation of arrays of optical vortices in the process of second-harmonic generation in a crystal
with moderate Poynting vector walk-off, pumped with focused beams containing screw phase
dislocations. Our experiments were conducted in lithium triborate under conditions of smallefficiency second-harmonic generation pumped by nanosecond pulses at 1064 nm.

AB: We study linear and nonlinear wave scattering by an optical vortex in a self-defocusing
nonlinear Kerr medium. In the linear case, we find a splitting of a plane-wave front at the vortex
proportional to its circulation, similar to what occurs in the scattered wave of electrons for the
Aharonov-Bohm effect. For larger wave amplitudes, we study analytically and numerically the
scattering of a dark-soliton stripe (a nonlinear analog of a small-amplitude wave packet) by a
vortex and observe a significant asymmetry of the scattered wave. Subsequently, a wave-front
splitting of the scattered wave develops into transverse modulation instability, "unzipping" the
stripe into trains of vortices with opposite charges.

The propagation dynamics of an optical vortex pair is experimentally confirmed to experience
enhanced rotation in a self-defocusing medium. We measured this effect to be 3.5 times larger
than in linear media. The enhancement is attributed to nonlinear refraction within the dark vortex
cores, permitting the vortices to propagate as vortex filaments.

An analysis is made of the singularities of the polarization field of the cosmic microwave
background, where the polarization is equal to zero. It is found that the classification of the
singular points differs from the usual three types known in ordinary differential equations. The
new statistical properties of the polarization field are discussed, and new methods to detect the
presence of primordial tensor perturbations are indicated.
