Introduction to Lesson Twelve
As you come to the final lesson and assignment in Interior Design 30, think back to
what you have learned throughout the course. You now have a working knowledge
of the elements and principles of design as they relate to creating living spaces that
are functional and aesthetic. By working on many small projects and a major interior
design project, you have experienced the work of being an interior designer.
Interior design may have captivated your interest and inspired you to examine
career options or simply to study the current trends in interior design. At this point in
the course you are also preparing for the final examination. Several questions may
be in your thoughts.

What are the current trends in interior design?

What skills and knowledge in interior design will you continue to develop?

What type of review will help you to prepare for the final examination?

How will the final examination be organized?

Lesson 12
How important is the interior design process?
Reflect back on your learning throughout the course; do you
see your living spaces differently now because you have
learned how interior design benefits us? Becoming familiar
with the use of the elements of design and the application of
the principles of design allows us to create living spaces that
express our personalities and gain control over our
environment. Both comfort and pleasure are functions of
interior design.
What are some ways to maintain an interest in interior
design?
No doubt by now you have developed a keen
interest in interior design. You have probably
become aware of a variety of publications, such
as magazines and web sites devoted entirely to
interior design. Throughout the course you met
several people who work in the interior design
field. Through these professionals you have
become aware that most furniture stores employ
design consultants and interior designers who are
available to discuss interior design.
You may have become aware of a number of television programs, such as Designer
Guys, Trading Spaces, and The Painted House. These entertaining and informative
programs are very popular. Viewers experience the designers’ decision-making
processes in interior design and learn how to make changes in their living spaces.
The Saskatchewan Interior Designers Association
may also provide information and recommendations
about the interior design process. Many newspapers
carry articles about interior design. For example,
The Regina Leader-Post ‘Arts and Life’ section on
Saturdays shares very interesting and informative
articles on decorating and design. Local residents
and their home renovations are often profiled.

The Leader-Post also publishes a monthly magazine called Home Lifestyles of
Regina and Area. The articles discuss many issues related to home furnishings and
interior design. Saskatchewan Renovations, Home Improvements, and Design is a
magazine published quarterly by Home Base Media in Saskatoon. The magazine
shares stories and gives advice on home renovations.
Of course, just talking to neighbors and friends about interior design and home
renovations also keeps up an interest and an awareness of interior design. Sharing
ideas about how we design our living spaces is enriching and inspiring. Interior
design is a creative process. Developing our skills in creativity is important in all
areas of our lives, addressing both our primary needs and our secondary needs.
Interior design is also fun!
Is it important to be aware of the current trends in interior design?
There are varying opinions on what is popular in interior design. We do not need to
follow the latest trends to be stylish, but decorating trends do help to add excitement
and creativity to interior designing. If we are going to follow a certain trend we
should first be sure that it is right for our needs and lifestyle. Our lifestyle and our
budget are determining factors when it comes to furnishing and decorating our living
spaces.
Working through the lessons and assignments in Interior Design 30 will have helped
you to be aware of interior design.
The next section will give you some tips to help you prepare for the final
examination.

Lesson 12
What type of review will help with studying for the final
examination in Interior Design 30?
Consider study methods that best suit your learning
style and optimum attention. For example, some
students learn more quickly during the day than at
night. This means, that, if possible, plan to do the
bulk of your studying during the day. Short study
sessions may work more effectively than longer
study sessions. Or, take breaks when studying for
long periods.
The following may help you to systematically review
the concepts presented in the lessons in the course.
 Take note of the objectives for each lesson.
 Re-read the lesson material, highlighting important concepts, ideas, and terms.
 Go over the lesson and the assignment, making sure to correct answers where
you had difficulty. Review the questions that worked well to determine your
strengths. Be sure that you understand any comments or corrections made by
your teacher.
 Review the Summary and Key Words and Phrases sections at the end of each
lesson. Be sure you understand the definitions for the terms and how to use
each of the terms.
Contact your teacher if you are having major difficulties with any concepts or ideas
in the course material.
How is the final examination organized?
In the assignment section of this lesson you will find a sample examination. It is a
model of the final examination you will write for this course. The sample
examination is intended to help you review the course and show you the types of
questions you might encounter on the final examination.
The final examination is 2½ hours long. To further prepare you for the final
examination, you may wish to write the sample examination under examination
conditions. In other words, check your time, and do not use any books or notes to
help you answer the questions. You will be required to take pencil crayons and
your furniture template with you into the examination.

Lesson 12
After you have completed the examination, refer to the information in the course to
correct or explain answers more fully before submitting your Assignment Twelve for
evaluation. When you write the final examination you will not be able to refer
to your notes.
You might find the following examination writing tips helpful as you work through the
sample examination and the final examination.
Examination Writing Tips
On the day of the examination, be sure to arrive at the
correct location at the correct time. Once you have
arrived and have received your paper, keep the following
suggestions in mind.

Put your name on the examination. If you forget to
indicate who you are, all your efforts will be futile.

Look over the examination completely before you
begin to write. Doing so will help you to do the following.




to plan your time allocation for each question
to make you aware of the specific instructions for answering questions
to give you time to relax and organize your thoughts
to help you to decide which question to answer first

Start with a question that you are sure that you can answer. This will boost your
confidence for the rest of the examination.

Read questions carefully and follow the directions. Do only what the question
asks for but answer completely and concisely. Remember, quantity does not
equate to quality.

Use your time wisely. Organize your thoughts before you start to answer. Note
the value of each question and allocate your time accordingly. If you are unsure
of an answer, go on to the next question and return to the problem question
later.

Do a final check of your examination before handing it in. Make sure all
questions have been answered.

Hand in your exam and celebrate your successful completion of
