Josef Weinberger – One-Act Comedies

A BETROTHAL by Lanford Wilson (1 Man 1 Woman. 1 interior set).

Two fanatical iris-growers meet at a flower show – outraged that their wonderful flowers have been ignored by the judges. This recently premiered in London with Ben Kingsley and

Geraldine James playing the two characters. Review in The Times called it ‘elegant and glittering’ … and said it had ‘fierce humour that makes you wish it was twice as long.’

PVT WARS by James McLure (3 Men. 1 Interior set).

Three Vietnam veterans are in an Army hospital. They tease, torment, entertain , exasperate and on occasion console each other in a series of short scenes. This play is very popular with actors and audiences alike.

LONE STAR by James McLure (3 Men. 1 Exterior set).

Set in a cluttered back yard of a small town Texas bar, 3 men talk about their Vietnam experiences, their main concerns and their amorous encounters. These characters are welldrawn and the humour is sharp and all-pervasive.

LAUNDRY AND BOURBON by James McLure (3 Women. 1 Exterior set).

Three women – small-town wives of Vietnam veterans – gossip on a porch, sorting laundry and sipping bourbon ’n’ coke. The characters are well-drawn and with some inner strength and depth. The humour is sharp-edged and sometimes bitter as the women face up to the turmoil their menfolk have endured since returning from Vietnam. This is a companion piece to Lone Star by the same writer but works equally well on its own.

LITTLE MISS FRESNO by Ara Watson and Mary Gallagher (2 Women. 1 interior set).

Two very different mothers have daughters competing in a beauty contest. As they await the judges’ verdict they discuss their daughters’ attributes and talents. Great sense of muted rivalry and one-upmanship. (Available in WIN/LOSE/DRAW)

CHOCOLATE CAKE by Mary Gallagher (2 Women. 1 interior set).

Two women attend a conference called ‘Your New Life starts Here’ – they are both secret gorgers! Their favourite topic is FOOD. The funnier their exchanges become, the more we are aware of the deprivation and disappointments which have led them to compensate with compulsive over-indulging. (Available in WIN/LOSE/DRAW)

BRIGHT SOCIETY by Cherry Vooght (11 Women. 1 Interior set).

Village amateur drama group in the throes of last minute rehearsals for their entry in a local festival.

LET’S BE FRIENDS by Cherry Vooght (9 Women. 1 Interior set).

Group of women prepare to go on air on a radio programme. Their final minutes of preparation and rehearsal are hilarious.

YOU CAN’T FIGHT CITY HALL, BREN by Pam Valentine (1 man 3 Women. 1 Interior set).

Mother’s house is to be demolished by City Hall. Her son and his family arrive for Sunday lunch to discuss the matter. Mother and daughter-in-law move from bickering to ganging up on the son. The house is saved but the son has had enough …!

MARRAKECH by Graham Swannell (1 Man 1 Woman. 1 interior set).

Mid-life crisis – husband decides to leave London and go to Marrakech to write a book – alone! His wife, a successful G.P. , drops a bombshell of her own. A comedy of deception and role-reversal. Available in a volume with The Border.

THE PLAY READING by Joan Honey (6 Women. 1 interior set).

A normal pay-reading in the sitting-room of a drama group member. Or is it? The hostess acts strangely. The youngest member (self-proclaimed psychic) is troubled. The ‘daily woman’ comes rushing in having left for home …. Humour and tension prevail throughout.
